The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was a watershed moment for my generation of Chinese youth when we realized the significance of "opening up" and "mutual respect" and took pride in our heritage.

I remember people singing the song "Beijing Welcomes You," everyone was so excited to welcome guests from all over the world and share our culture and happiness with them.

Beijing Welcomes You features a hundred well-known performers and entertainers from nations such as China, Singapore, and South Korea. The music video is a compilation of scenes from across Beijing.

Many Chinese still remember the song's lyrics:

"The door of my house is always open, waiting for you with open arms.

After hugging, there will be a new understanding, and you will fall in love with this place...

From all around the world, we are all friends; please feel welcome."

For China, 2008 was a year of challenges. Our country saw a series of winter storms, followed by a massive earthquake in Sichuan that killed about 70,000 people. Despite everything that had happened, the Chinese managed to pull off an incredible Olympic Games.

We have kept our pledges of "opening up" to the world. With the new visa-free policies, more people are visiting China to explore the nation. Those who are respectful and open to communicating with us will always feel our genuine welcome.

In light of everything going on, maybe we could use more of this kind of friendship right now.
