@krisgulati For example, we pay MPP TAs 3k per course, so 6k per year to TA 2 courses. We have to pay 120k in tuition + stipend to have a PhD student TA 2 courses per year. Not worth it even if they are much better.

@krisgulati On average it’s unclear to me whether MBA/MPP students are worse than PhD students at TAing undergrads (most complain that PhD students are too theoretical and don’t care about teaching), but it is clear that even if PhD students were far better, it’s not worth paying 20x

@krisgulati @Jon_Hartley_ Actually, PhD students are very expensive TAs/RAs, because the department needs to "pay" their tuition to central admin. Departments are much better off hiring MBA/MPP students as TAs (which most top departments do now for undergrad classes) and hire lecturers.
