Wholesale prices are only part of the story.
With the Autumn Budget on 28 October and winter bills coming into focus, network charges, policy costs and levies continue to shape what households and businesses pay. For some business sites, combined network charges could soon exceed wholesale electricity costs.
In our latest blog by Ed Reed, we explore why non-commodity costs are among the most complex and fast-changing parts of the GB energy market, and what that means for anyone managing energy procurement.

Our Energy Users Lead, Jacob Briggs, joined David Edmonds on EDF Business & Wholesale's Talking Power podcast to discuss what is pushing up business energy costs and the steps organisations can take in response.
In this clip, Jacob explains how the challenges differ between the transmission and distribution networks, and how flexibility can help meet rising demand from technologies such as EVs and heat pumps, without always needing to upgrade the wires.
The full episode looks more broadly at what drives costs, including wholesale prices, network spending, policy charges and market reform, alongside the options open to businesses.
Jacob's central point is that energy is no longer just a purchasing decision. With costs, risks and opportunities all shifting, it now deserves a place in wider business strategy.

Your Licence Exempt Supply (LES) questions, answered.
Our recent webinar with Enosi, Licence Exempt Supply: Experts Unpack P442, prompted a wide range of questions from across the market. From which assets can participate and how LES interacts with existing support schemes, to cost shifting, policy risk and what it could mean for community energy.
We couldn’t get to all the questions live, so we’ve grouped the outstanding ones by theme and set out our responses in a new blog from Robert Buckley.

With CI Live only five weeks away, we're pleased to welcome the Energy Consultants Association as a partner for this year's event.
The consultants, brokers and TPIs the ECA represents work where the market meets its customers, dealing with rising non-commodity costs, contract structures and supplier behaviour every day. That's exactly the kind of experience we want in the room at CI Live when the industry talks about where things go next.
The ECA provides a collective voice for the sector, working with regulators and industry stakeholders to push for higher standards across the market, and we're looking forward to bringing this into the day's discussions.
On 4 November at Glaziers Hall, senior policymakers, regulators and energy CEOs will be looking at the policy and investment signals shaping the year ahead and what the push for Clean Power means in practice.

Our latest price cap forecast shows household energy costs could go up by 16% in January, which would be the biggest rise in 4 years, as the conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt gas supplies to the UK and the rest of the world.
The knock-on effects have seen EU gas storage stocks at their lowest September levels in 15 years, meaning the effects could also stretch well beyond this winter.
The extent of January’s increase will depend on how the US-Iran conflict progresses. However, even if the conflict ended tomorrow, the supply disruption would likely take months to correct itself, impacting households and businesses alike.

Millions of households could be paying more than they need to for energy, simply because smart tariffs are not built with them in mind.
Cornwall Insight's new report commissioned by Secure Meters - Being Smarter with Data and Metering - looks at how combining smart meter data with demographic insight could unlock a new generation of time-of-use tariffs, built around real routines rather than a one-size-fits-all rate.
Around 70% of British homes have a smart meter capable of running time-of-use tariffs, yet these tariffs make up less than 3% of the domestic market.
Most tariffs are built around one use case, EV charging. But night-shift workers, busy families, people with a heat pump or battery, and households on lower incomes could all see real savings too.
Pair that with automated systems that shift usage to cheaper periods, and households could see the savings without having to manage the timing themselves.

Want to know how Licence Exempt Supply really works?
Energy procurement is changing. New market structures and growing interest in local generation are opening up options well beyond traditional supply deals. Licence Exempt Supply is one of them, letting generators supply consumers directly without a supply licence.
The idea is not new, but questions about licensing, settlement and how it all works day-to-day make it hard to see where the opportunity really sits. To weigh up the commercial case, you first need to understand the rules and the mechanics behind it.
Our joint webinar with Enosi, Licence Exempt Supply: Experts Unpack P442, takes place on Tuesday 29 September at 11am.
In this one-hour interactive session, our experts and industry guests will cover:

With CI Live just weeks away, we're pleased to welcome the Utilities Intermediaries Association (UIA) as a partner for this year's event on 4 November at Glaziers Hall, London.
UIA represents third party intermediaries (TPIs) across the UK's business energy and water markets, the brokers and consultants many companies lean on for pricing, contracts and advice on getting the best deal.
It's a significant time for the sector, with Ofgem now developing legislation to bring TPIs under direct regulation, a topic likely to come up across the day alongside sessions on uncertainty in business energy costs and the wider regulatory outlook.

Are you getting the full value from the smart meters already on the wall?
Most homes now have a smart meter, but the data they produce is still not being used well. Used properly, it can help suppliers offer smarter tariffs and forecast demand more accurately, and give network operators a clearer picture of their networks.
Questions around data access, regulation and industry incentives are still holding progress back, and with MHHS migration underway, the choices made now will decide how much value the industry gets back from its investment.
To coincide with the launch of our latest report with Secure Meters, our free webinar, Being Smarter with Data and Metering: Unlocking the Full Value of Smart Meter Data, takes place on Tuesday 22 September at 11am.
In this 45-minute interactive session, we will cover:
- An overview of the report’s key findings on where the value in smart meter data sits and how to capture it
- The opportunities for suppliers and network operators, and the barriers still holding progress back, and what the industry can do about them
- What GB can learn from international smart metering programmes
The session closes with a live Q&A, so bring your questions for our experts and Secure Meters’ Group CEO Suket Singhal.

Flexibility is no longer just a winter story.
Heatwaves pushed up demand this summer and NESO issued four Electricity Margin Notices, highlighting the challenging conditions the GB electricity system now faces all year round.
In our latest blog, Ed Reed looks at how the flexibility landscape is changing, and what it means for the organisations operating in it. From the growing range of technologies now helping to balance the system, to the reforms opening the market up to smaller assets, and the commercial opportunity our own analysis expects to grow significantly by the end of the decade.

Can you plan your energy costs beyond the next few months with any confidence?
Wholesale prices are only part of the story. A growing share of what a business pays for its electricity is now set by network, system and policy charges, and those elements can move with limited notice or visibility. This is creating real challenges for organisations trying to budget, manage risk and plan investment with confidence.
Our free webinar, Business Energy Costs: Cutting Through the Uncertainty, takes place on Wednesday 16 September at 10am.
In this 30-minute interactive session, we will cover:
- Where we see business energy costs heading
- What is driving the uncertainty across network, system and policy charges
- What this means for budgeting, procurement and investment decisions
The session runs as a live Q&A, so bring your questions for our experts.
