🇷🇺 The Trojan Horse in the Oval Office

For a decade Trump has insisted that every link between him and Moscow was a hoax, a witch hunt cooked up by sore losers. CNN now reports that fourteen Russian spy satellites swept over Prince Sultan Air Base two days before Iran struck it on March 27, wounding twelve Americans and destroying an AWACS aircraft that had been moved and was found anyway.

American officials say Russian data very likely fed that strike and several others, including one on a CIA facility in Riyadh, in a war that has by the Pentagon's own count killed at least eleven American service members.

This is where the hoax collides with the body count. Putin helps Tehran put missiles onto American bases, and the president answers with a warm phone call about trade, according to the Kremlin, and a plan to strip a third of America's forces out of Europe, which happens to be precisely what Moscow has wanted since 1949.

Whether it is design or vanity hardly matters any more, because America has wheeled a Trojan horse into the Oval Office and the damage is being done from the inside. This is, after all, a man who barks at allies and goes weak at the knees for anyone with a scowl and a secret police, and one suspects that had bin Laden only paid him a compliment, he too would have been a very, very smart guy who had been treated very unfairly.

The remarkable thing is that the whole world can see it. Europe sees it, Canada sees it and is taking notes, and Moscow and Tehran saw it first and acted accordingly. Only one nation on earth still hasn't worked it out, and it is the one paying in aircraft, bases, allies and lives. History will struggle to explain how a superpower allowed itself to be so thoroughly outmanoeuvred by a man it had been warned about for ten years.

The grown-ups have simply wrapped the toy he already owned in shiny new paper, told him it was the biggest present anyone has ever had, and he is now running round the garden showing it to everyone. He will certainly make the history books, although I fear not in the chapter he was hoping for.

Let’s be perfectly clear. It does not hurt the world. The only countries that buy Russian diesel are Turkey, Brazil, and North and West Africa.

Donald Trump stood on the fairway of his own golf course in Ireland on Sunday and informed the world that the diesel crisis "isn't done by the Middle East." It is, he says, Zelenskyy's fault for hitting Russian refineries. This will come as news to the tankers idling outside the Strait of Hormuz, which was open for business before February, was briefly reopened in June, and has been effectively shut again since July, with traffic down to a trickle under naval escort.

That is the shortage. A fifth of the world's seaborne oil, a tenth of its diesel and a fifth of its jet fuel used to pass through that strait. American diesel hit a record above six dollars a gallon on Friday, and it did so because a war Trump started ended with Tehran holding the key to the Gulf, not because a Ukrainian drone found a tank farm in Krasnodar.

The whole world watched the United States go into Iran and come out with a ceasefire, a broken memorandum and a closed strait, the most humiliating result in the history of American power. Rather than admit it, the president asks the country being bombed every night to stop fighting back, so that Russia can sell more diesel and he can survive November.
