לפני יומיים התקשר אליי מתנדב שמבלה שעות ארוכות במסגרת נוכחות מגנה בכפרים הפלסטיניים ליד שכם וביקש שאאתר מומחה לתברואה ומים כי המתנחבלים זרקו צואה לאחד הבארות באזור דומה. זה אינו המקרה הראשון, ובמקומות אחרים הם זרקו לשם פגרים של חיות או חומרים רעילים.

The problem with "visual investigations" is that video footage cannot tell you intent.

It cannot tell you targeting decisions.

And it certainly cannot establish a violation of international law.

At best, it shows that smoke munitions were deployed.

Even identifying white phosphorus from video footage alone is notoriously difficult.

Smoke munitions can look remarkably similar on camera.

Which is why legal conclusions are usually based on battlefield evidence - not social media clips and visual guesswork.

Even Arab leaders admit it.

Everyone is sharing the Bill Clinton clip where he describes how Yasser Arafat rejected a generous peace offer at Camp David that would have given the Palestinians a state on 96 percent of the West Bank, land swaps, and a capital in East Jerusalem. Clinton says Arafat lied to him and that the Palestinian leadership never actually wanted a two-state solution. They wanted to destroy Israel. It’s a video often shared by people like @VividProwess, and it’s an important one for people to see.

Of course, critics immediately dismiss it. They claim Clinton is biased or he’s pro-Israel. They’ll tell you that you cannot trust the American perspective.

Ok, so let us set that aside.

Now watch this.

In this powerful interview, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, a major Arab leader who was directly involved in negotiations, says exactly the same thing from the Arab side. He talks about the Mena House Conference in Cairo as well as the Camp David negotiations of 1978. All failed because of the Palestinians repeatedly rejecting any offer. The Oslo accords were signed but because Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad were not involved, they derailed the accords and any chance for peace by initiating 4 years of terrorist suicide attacks in Israel. Then came the second Camp David negotiations in 2000 which Arafat agreed to, then rejected and instead initiated the Second Intifada.

Mubarak explains how the Palestinians refused to even participate in the Mena House conference of 1977. He describes repeated opportunities they were given, including a detailed document that called for Israeli withdrawal from the Samaria, Judea and Gaza, security arrangements during a transitional period, and other major concessions. The Israelis were willing to negotiate on difficult issues like who would control security. The Palestinians, according to Mubarak, kept saying no and wasting chance after chance.

He speaks with clear frustration about how for decades the Palestinian side has rejected peace initiatives and realistic compromises.

The video further shows footage from the PLO representative in 1977, as well as old footage of Egyptian president Sadat who was involved in the Mena House and first Camp David negotiations of 1978.

This perhaps is far more impactful than Clinton’s account because it is not a Western or Israeli voice. It is prominent Arab leaders who lived the negotiations, who represented the broader Arab world, and who had zero incentive to defend Israel.

When leaders from both sides of the table describe the same pattern of Palestinian rejectionism and violence, it becomes much harder to dismiss as bias.

The pattern is clear across decades and across different voices… generous offers, repeated refusals, and continued demands for everything while giving nothing in return.

This is not ancient history. It is the core reason the conflict continues today.

The claim that Israel's actions in Palestine following October 7, 2023 are driving an increase in antisemitism is popular, but is it true?

It is not. Americans may think so, because Americans are privileged to live in a country where high levels of explicitly eliminationist antisemitism never took hold, which made the tone and tenor of conversation about Israel after 2023 particularly shocking to them.

But the problem is that antisemitism never went away in Europe. It went underground, and now, it has resurged, spreading its taint to American discourse.

In Germany, about half of people agree that Israel is trying to exterminate the Palestinians. After the Gaza War, you might claim, that number makes sense.

The problem? That number comes from 2011, before the Gaza War, from a country where publicly expressing Holocaust denial and antisemitism is functionally illegal.

The fact is that European society, like Arab society, is virulently antisemitic on a level that Americans cannot understand, and so they are unprepared to diagnose where antisemitism comes from when it gains a foothold on their shores. To them, it seems an organic reaction to the Gaza War.

But it never was. It is the world's reaction to the Gaza War, as evidenced by how, on October 8, 2023, people were marching in New York City, declaring openly that Israel was committing a genocide, weeks before the Gaza War even started.

That is because they already thought Israel was committing genocide. They saw the visibility of Jews in the media following October 7 as an opportunity to reawaken latent antisemitism that makes people so primed to accept any claim about Jews, no matter how stupid or irrational that claim may be.

America can survive this. We can be better than the Arab Middle East or Europe. But we have to recognize that is where the genocide libel comes from, that it's not Israel, or we will lose what makes us American.

This is inversion so callous it's hard to believe.

The Holocaust had a survival rate of about 30%. Millions of people disappeared from European cities and towns over several years. Everybody knew because it was happening all around them.

Gaza has a survival rate, despite the worst and most deadly and horrible periods of the war, of 97%.

All the dead Jews were noncombatants. A large percentage of the dead Gazans were combatants.

And the Jews of Europe, even as their millennia-old civilization was being systematically wiped out, wanted nothing from the societies that surrounded them except to be allowed to live in peace.

Gaza's leadership of religious fanatics, meanwhile, wants every last Israeli dead and gone, is willing to fight to the last Gazan to achieve that aim, has said so publicly and worked for decades to blow up every peace attempt -- and even now believes that Gaza's destruction would be a worthwhile sacrifice to lay on the altar of Israel's destruction, because their god told them so.

So Israelis can reasonably believe, given those features of the Gaza war that aren't true about any genocide ever, and were pretty much the opposite of what was happening in the Holocaust, that Gaza's suffering is a bad and painful war, but not remotely a genocide.

But the point of it all, of course, is not to analyze Gaza, but specifically to lump it together with the Holocaust -- to cast the Jews as the new Nazis.

The only reason this person would dare to make such an insanely ahistorical and immoral parallel is because this is the heart of the bigoted propaganda campaign in which he enthusiastically participates: The point of it all is to make the Jews into the Nazis.

A culture that obsessed about Jews being evil and was then shocked by the Holocaust into obsessing about dead Jews as the apotheosis of righteous victimhood is now obsessively engaged in knocking Jews off that moral pedestal they themselves put them on.

That's why they don't care one whit about Hamas massacres of Gazans, about genocidal wars in Syria or Yemen (even when they've funded and armed the sides), about flotilla activists currently held by the Libyans...literally nothing triggers a response except Jews.

They still, even after all these generations, no matter what else is happening in the world or in their own societies, can't stop thinking about Jews.

And as we Jews learned in the 1940s -- the actual, historical 1940s, not the weird fantasies conjured up by these bigots -- a whole society can be in the grip of a callous, destructive bigotry and still believe it is true and righteous.
