I read a post from @BaronDestructo as to the future of SF and it made me think Why #SaveStargate matters

Saving Stargate isn’t just about bringing back another TV show. It’s about preserving a style of science fiction that inspired generations.

Stargate showed us that sci-fi could be intelligent without being inaccessible, exciting without relying on endless darkness, and emotional because of the people—not just the spectacle. It made us believe that exploration, curiosity and hope still had a place in the future.

Alongside shows like Firefly, Farscape, Dark Matter and Quantum Leap, it proved that great science fiction isn’t defined by visual effects—it’s defined by its characters and the ideas it explores.

Firefly reminded us that family isn’t always defined by blood. Farscape embraced imagination without limits and wasn’t afraid to be different. Dark Matter explored whether our past defines who we become or whether we can choose a better future. Quantum Leap showed that changing one person’s life can change the world, and that empathy, compassion and hope are powerful forces.

Today’s audiences don’t need more bleak futures. They need stories that remind us why we fell in love with science fiction in the first place: the excitement of stepping into the unknown, asking “what if?”, and believing that humanity can be better than it is today.

That’s why #SaveStargate matters. It’s not just about nostalgia. It’s about ensuring future generations experience the same sense of wonder, optimism and adventure that made so many of us fall in love with science fiction in the first place.

A growing number of states are adopting stricter standards for air conditioning systems. California and New York are at the forefront of this movement, with additional states implementing comparable measures.

These regulations do not prohibit the use of air conditioners. Instead, they focus on the refrigerants employed in many modern cooling units.

California enforces some of the most rigorous requirements in the country, mandating that many new air conditioners and heat pumps utilize refrigerants with significantly reduced environmental impact. New York has introduced similar standards for hydrofluorocarbons and is exploring further measures concerning refrigerant handling and equipment recycling.

States such as Washington, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia have also enacted limits on high-global-warming-potential refrigerants or synchronized their policies with updated federal guidelines.

The primary objective is to curb emissions of hydrofluorocarbons, commonly known as HFCs. Although these substances do not harm the ozone layer, certain types can trap hundreds or thousands of times more heat than carbon dioxide when released into the atmosphere.

Advocates emphasize that the transition will lower greenhouse gas emissions and promote more energy-efficient cooling technologies. Opponents contend that the changes may raise the initial cost of new air conditioners, potentially straining budgets for renters, older adults, and low-income families amid more frequent and intense heat waves.

Current air conditioning units can typically remain in service and be repaired as needed. The new rules primarily apply to newly produced or installed systems, so most households will encounter the updates only upon replacing older equipment.

With extreme heat events increasing across the United States, officials confront a critical balance: how to develop cleaner cooling solutions without compromising affordability for those who need them most.
