⚠️ A FEW STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON

The Storm Prediction Center is monitoring northern and central Iowa for a few stronger thunderstorms this afternoon.

Storms have already begun developing near a boundary across the state, where plenty of instability is available. While storms are expected to remain fairly isolated and may be short-lived, a few could become strong to severe.

⛈️ Main threats:
• Hail up to around 1.25 inches
• Wind gusts up to around 60 MPH

The probability of a severe thunderstorm watch being issued is currently only 20%, so a watch is considered unlikely.

Most locations will not see severe weather, but keep an eye on the radar if you have outdoor plans this afternoon.

3 PM Update: Severe Weather Threat Expanded Farther South Across Iowa

The latest 3 PM Storm Prediction Center outlook has expanded the severe weather threat farther south across Iowa as conditions continue to become more favorable for strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

The biggest concern continues to be damaging straight-line winds, with gusts of 60 to 80+ mph possible in the strongest storms. Large hail is also possible, and while the tornado threat remains lower, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, especially if storms can remain more isolated before merging into larger clusters.

Increasing sunshine across eastern Iowa has helped fuel an increasingly unstable atmosphere, and newer forecast guidance is showing a greater chance for organized severe thunderstorms developing across more of the state this evening.

The ISCN Weather Team will continue to monitor conditions throughout the afternoon and evening and provide updates as storms develop. Stay weather aware!
