For #Juneteenth: 70+ years after the Civil War, the WPA's Federal Writers' Project began interviewing elderly Americans who remembered being enslaved. These moving narratives & photos are now held here at the Library.

I, Too
BY LANGSTON HUGHES
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, am America.
#OnThisDay in 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX to read Order No. 3, which affirmed the end of slavery in the states of the former Confederacy. This momentous occasion became known as #Juneteenth, a combination of “June” & “19th." More: https://t.co/bitoMm27sm
Eleven years ago today, nine Black worshippers were murdered during Bible study at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston.
Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney. Cynthia Hurd. Susie Jackson. Ethel Lance. Rev. Depayne Middleton-Doctor. Tywanza Sanders. Rev. Daniel Simmons Sr. Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton. Myra Thompson.
We say their names and remember the sacredness of their lives.
This was not only a mass shooting. It was a heinous act of white supremacy carried out in a house of worship. We must tell the truth about that hatred, grieve what it stole, and remain committed to dismantling the violence of racism in every form.

For Jesus, sin is often a failure to bother to love. As I mentioned in the podcast with Hasan Minhaj, this insight is from the moral theologian James Keenan, SJ.
@DeKhayel@parentswlove@BlueGeorgia Nope. This is interpretation, not a quote or a fact.
For a detailed breakdown of the exact timelines for different provisions, you can review the Council on Foreign Relations JCPOA Backgrounder or the Arms Control Association JCPOA Overview.
They won’t teach you about these Black inventions and innovations in schools. That’s why you need to read and do research for yourself while teaching the younger generation.
@Yorktown355@TaraCopp@TaskandPurpose Competent women hate to have concepts and udeas that they understood mansplained to them.
Making new rules to address culture is part of the job.
And just bc you didn't approve of those two women leaders doesn't prove anything or make your assessment accurate.
@spraguepond@TaraCopp@TaskandPurpose It'dd have to be blind assessment. Otherwise the cut line is not necessarily about merit but politics and who you know or who is advocating for you (or trading favors).
This is a not a binary competition between DEI and merit. DEI and qualified are not exclusive or opposites.
The treatment of detainees inside Delaney Hall is appalling.
Lack of medical care. Insufficient and sometimes infested food. Overflowing sewage, overcrowding, no outdoor time, and blatant retaliation.
Nearly all of them have no criminal record and many are in this country lawfully, yet they are being held in conditions worse than criminal jail.
This is just un-American. They must be released now.
