I’ve brought this up so many times to non artists. AI isn’t a tool saving anyone time. If you are able to make high level work that ai regurgitates and are capable of fixing its mistakes YOU NEVER WOULD HAVE MADE THOSE MISTAKES TO BEGIN WITH. It’s a literal waste of time

Investigation reveals that a dataset used for gen AI training by Apple & others contains copyrighted YouTube transcripts accessed without permission. More info:

- The Pile dataset contains transcripts of 170k YouTube videos
- Used by Apple, Anthropic, Nvidia, Salesforce & more to train LLMs
- YouTube doesn’t allow this, so were transcripts accessed illegally?
- Transcripts were taken without the knowledge of the YouTube creators, who include @MrBeast, @MKBHD & many more
- This is against creators’ wishes: some are “frustrated”, one calls it “theft”
- Dataset includes videos that have since been deleted from YouTube (but you can’t delete them from a scraped dataset)
- At least some of the AI companies knew it included YouTube video transcripts but trained on it anyway
- At least one of the AI companies uses the excuse that Eleuther (a non-profit) did the scraping, not them. (This is a common line from AI companies.)
- As ever, one of the AI companies uses the excuse that the dataset is “publicly available”, apparently ignoring the fact that the data is copyrighted and may have been accessed illegally

It is all too common that one organization scrapes copyrighted work, claiming ignorance of how it will be used, and another (often a large tech company) trains a commercial AI model on that scraped work.

This is exploitative of creators, and cannot be permitted.
