Only the area around you is lit, and your tunnels stay lit. When the seal breaks, you can hear where the hidden stairs are, and that's your way down.

Every floor starts in the dark.

These past few days I've been nudging the ASCII closer to the NetHack I remember.

Messages up top, a status line at the bottom, darker rock, explosions in a 3×3 box. It says hello when you start, too.
