@DrHelenFry It is also good to honour and remember Ernst’s young Austrian wife Gerda Webster (née Karrach), also regarded an ‘enemy alien’. She trained to be a nurse and served in England throughout the war and for the rest of her career. RIP.

@DrHelenFry Ernst was one of five ‘X-Troopers’ attached to 47 Royal Marine Commando just before D-Day to support their epic mission to liberate Port-en-Bessin. Within 2 months, two more of the 5 would be killed and one other seriously wounded. We continue to commemorate and honour them.

…also remembering with gratitude his young Austrian wife Gerda Webster (née Karrach) - also an ‘enemy alien’. She trained as a nurse and served throughout the war at Staines Emergency Hospital in Middlesex and then had a long nursing career in England post war.

Ernst Weinberger was one of the 10,000 German and Austrian Jews who fought for Britain during WW2.

Born in Austria, he fought for Britain under the alias Ernest Webster & served with the elite 'X Troop' commandos.

He was killed in action on D-Day, on a landing craft.

Ernst Weinberger was one of five ‘X-Troop’ Commandos attached to 47 Royal Marine Commando a few days before D-Day for their epic mission to liberate Port-en-Bessin. Ernest’s sacrifice and the contribution of his comrades is commemorated on 6 June every year by our Association.

Cecil landed in an amphibious tank on Gold Beach on D-day, and was among those tasked with attacking part of the German concrete defences.
