Iranians are voicing anger at skyrocketing food prices as the rial trades at a record low of 2.62 million to the US dollar. One resident said a zero-sugar soda and a yogurt came to 5.3 million rials (about $2), sarcastically calling the Islamic Republic "the number-one superpower in the world." Another paid 1.1 million rials (around $0.45) for a malt drink and a cocktail sausage, saying: "I don't know whether to laugh or cry." An Iranian man inside Iran is asked whether he dislikes Iraqis.

He says yes, because of the eight-year Iran-Iraq War.

The interviewer then asks if he hates Americans.

He replies: “I cannot answer that.”

The interviewer asks: “Why? We’re also at war with them.”

He responds: “Well, if they attack us, why did they attack us?”

The implication being that if they attacked Iran, they did so to get rid of the regime that is killing its own people.

Now, this sounds super strange to me, since the likes of Dave Smith, Ana Kasparian, Cenk Uygur, and Scott Horton keep telling us over and over again that the Iranian people hate this war, hate America for it, and that it’s only the crazy pro-Pahlavi Iranian diaspora who support the war.

Super confusing.
