There’s a difference between “high-skill” and “responsible”. You can have a responsible low-skilled 14yo watch your kid and it’s literally fine. All of us were baby sitters EXACTLY in this vein in the 90s and 00s and the kids we watched were fine.

You def don’t want an irresponsible person watching your kid, but baby-sitting doesn’t have to be a skilled position.

I have a theory that babies are more likely to be unable to play with themselves because when they were newborns, the parents were on their phones a lot, so the baby had to be fussy to get enough attention and became insecure about being left alone.

i hung out with an easy baby for 2 hours yesterday and it made me want to cry. the baby crawled around on the floor entertaining himself and ignoring his parents for 45 min. he quietly nursed and fell asleep in a bright room full of talking people.

my baby had to be removed from the same room 3 min in bc he got antsy and annoyed as soon as he wasn’t being walked around and entertained. most days we are lucky if he will play for 5 min independently at any point in time.

every few months i realize all over again how hard my baby actually is. i keep deluding myself into thinking he’s about to outgrow his fussiness. right now im convinced that once he can crawl he’ll be happy, but i previously thought that once he could play with toys he’d chill out and that has not been true.

the only silver lining i can think of is that my next baby has a very high chance of being easier, and it’ll feel like a walk in the park compared to this.
