🇺🇳🤝🇧🇪 Met today with @UN Secretary-General @AntonioGuterres. A frank and wide-ranging conversation at a time when the world needs the United Nations more than ever. Because the alternative to multilateralism is international chaos.
From Gaza to Lebanon, from Eastern Congo to Sudan, from Ukraine to Iran, the humanitarian shockwave is spreading and becoming harder to contain. Crises that dominated headlines weeks ago are already fading from the international agenda. We cannot allow that to happen. Every conflict deserves sustained attention, every civilian deserves protection.
I urged the Secretary-General to use his remaining months in office to continue speaking with full frankness. The UN must not bend under pressure or compromise on its fundamentals: international law, human rights, gender equality, climate action.
The UN must also reform to stay relevant. Belgium has been invested in this from the start. But ambition must be matched by implementation. We need a shared, realistic vision of what this organisation should look like in ten years, not piecemeal adjustments. The next Secretary-General will have to carry this forward.
Belgium remains a reliable partner. We pay our contributions on time. We provide core funding for core values. And we will continue to defend a rules-based international order, because for countries like ours, it is our life insurance.
