.@WHO is proud to celebrate India and South Africa for making major progress towards cervical cancer elimination by making HPV vaccines available to girls.

#India has launched the largest free HPV vaccination campaign in history, targeting almost 12 million girls aged 14 every year.

#SouthAfrica is ensuring every girl between 9 and 14 receives an HPV vaccine.

I urge more countries to take similar steps to achieve the 90-70-90 targets set out in the @WHO Global Strategy to eliminate cervical cancer:

-90 percent of girls vaccinated;
-70 percent of women screened;
-And 90% of women with cervical cancer or precancerous lesions treated, all by 2030.

The conflict in the Middle East is having an impact on health care in the occupied Palestinian territory, including the availability of supplies, access to care, and evacuations.

In Gaza, most crossings remain closed. Medical evacuations have been suspended since 28 February, and rotations of Emergency Medical Teams are on hold.

Essential medicines and medical supplies, including antibiotics and medicines for chronic conditions, are running low. Fuel is being prioritized for the facilities that need it most in order to keep life-saving health services running. Only the Kerem Shalom crossing reopened on 3 March to allow the entry of some fuel and humanitarian aid.

In the West Bank, checkpoint closures and movement restrictions are obstructing access to health care. Ambulances are taking longer to reach patients as they must use longer routes and search for accessible gates. Even before this escalation, medical supplies were in short supply and health workers were receiving only partial salaries, affecting the functioning of health facilities.

WHO calls for the opening of all routes into the Gaza Strip, unimpeded movement of medical supplies and health workers across the occupied Palestinian territory, and the protection of health care.

More importantly, WHO calls for immediate de-escalation in the region by all parties.

Women make up 70% of the global health workforce, yet they occupy only 25% of leadership roles.

This gap in representation continues to shape health priorities, policies, and practices.

Too often, women receive treatment protocols designed and tested primarily on men — not tailored for women’s biology and physiological needs.

On #IWD2026, I call for the equal inclusion of women in medical research, guideline and policy development, for health solutions tailored to their needs, and work environments that advance gender equality.
