@JustinWolfers@NickTimiraos Because reporting on backroom gossip is definitely what stenographers do. (Exhibit #3479 MAGA doesn't actually think it's in charge of the government)
@michaelturton I get what you're saying about domain knowledge but there is also statistics (unfortunately not what most people mean by "critical thinking" however)
@AngelicaOung A progressive war means a defensive one, on the side of the party whose territory has been violated.
Mock the concept all you like (not sure Kagan believes it either), but it's a bit disturbing that the distinction doesn't even seem to exist anymore!
@DarioCpx I love the way he just casually drops that the US is going to enact export controls in his interviews, and interviewers don't question him on that
@4xCaliban Big missed opportunity because one of the best uses of AI is to connect you with intellectual communities which have already worked on the problems you're interested in and align your vocabulary so that you can communicate with them.
@RajaKorman Housing costs are the low hanging fruit: they make American labor expensive and simultaneously draw in tons of foreign capital through mortgage repurchases.
@NewLeftEViews I'm confused about what you're confused about. Net debt stock is healthy, yes, but the pricing mechanism by which you would access those external assets is currency depreciation.
@BlackScholesMan QT + lack of forward guidance reveals that as the intention. Either one alone wouldn't change term structure. Both together are their own form of yield curve management.
@Scholars_Stage The refined version of that argument is that proper alignment of incentives both increases wealth and tilts outcomes toward cooperation. Simply dropping a bag of money on someone won't reduce conflict.
@mattyglesias Retirees are literally the capital class. They make money off of invested assets, and vote accordingly - but nobody's ready for the implications of that kind of Marxism.
@stevehou There's a more specific reason wrt AI doomerism. The British are obsessed with reliving their colonial guilt. They see the (real) parallels with the industrial revolution and extrapolate that to power seeking. That's why the most glib anti-AI takes often have a British accent.
@drvolts Doesn't an LVT just turn everyone against upzoning? It immediately increases everyone's land value assessments, long before any new construction to capture those rents.
@Birdyword Naturally increasing prices of existing assets is zero sum, just a sign of a good economy. But getting there through supply restrictions is negative sum.
(I haven't read the book yet, but plan to.)
