After managing to sort through the worst sign-in experience ever that attempted to log me into every MS account I had except the one that these messages were sent to, it appears that it is phishing, but through an incredibly roundabout way. The mystery message had a bad link.

They don't work in standalone Aura apps, and there's no provided way to enable them. The SLDS guide you posted was what I used to replicate what's already available in the rest of the lightning experience.

I like how @united just delays flights with no notice or compensation for its customers. Would have been cheaper and faster to just take a cab instead of my connecting flight, but talking to anyone from their overloaded customer service would take longer than the 6 hour delay!
