An interesting debate topic within #DigitalHumanities: Is DH a service or a scholar’s work/ scholarship ? Personally, I could see it as both depending on the application. We’ll see if my opinion changes after my classmate’s presentation #ENGL256BF21
“The power of words” is such a relatable theme for all our #gender studies courses. Working on the #DigitalHumanities project for re-forming the canon of Romantic poetry by looking into Letitia Elizabeth Landon’s works! Great things in the making 🤩 #ENGL256BF21
Loved how today’s #DH#ImageAnalysis presentation discusses the evolution of book covers! Although we “shouldn’t” judge a book by its cover, it’s still interesting to look at book cover choice and development which can reflect the time period and publication period #ENGL256BF21
Interesting to hear that image analysis can be used not only in the #DigitalHumanities field for #Gender related topic analyses, but also in the medical field in addition to artificial intelligence! #ENGL256BF21
Today’s class: our classmates are presenting about image analysis. They mentioned the type of information that can be obtained such as statistics, gender, age etc. #DigitalHumanities#ENGL256BF21
@BassamLeia Sounds like such a great initiative to increase the visibility of women in the field and promote a platform for women’s achievements! Sounds pretty similar to the #DigitalHumanities projects we looked into in the beginning of our #ENGL256BF21 course! #Gender
An interesting discussion on notions of time and space from a capta approach: space is ever-changing but we don’t always see it, but when we do them they would’ve developed into something major, similar to feminist movements, which have developed greatly with time! #ENGL256BF21
Although data visualization can help summarize data by putting things into perspective, avoid oversimplifying the data represented so as to avoid miscommunication & misinterpretation, which is especially a worry in gender-related topics. #ENGL256BF21#DigitalHumanities
Just presented about #DataandVisualization with @BassamLeia and @JadSlim15! This presentation really revealed a lot of gender-biases,debates and trends within the field. One thing that’s true is that there’s an active effort to avoid gender-biases in data collection #ENGL256BF21
@Ghadi_256B For sure! We rely heavily on computers to analyze texts for us and presents statistics, but we should always refer back to context to avoid misinterpretation. #ENGL256BF21
Just read about the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) to analyze texts. Through further research I found that NLP also includes basic functions like autocorrect where the computer can “understand” written language! #ENGL256BF21#DigitalHumanities
@BassamLeia It was definitely interesting to discuss our own experiences in the #workplace and reflect on what that meant from a gender perspective with gender stereotypes, including a discussion on differences in formal attire between genders! #ENGL256BF21#Gender
@BassamLeia Yes! Like most of our discussion in #DH, a large percentage of “founding fathers” were indeed men and data and visualization was no exception. However, more recent researches have been interdisciplinary collaboration of men and women, especially in universities #ENGL256BF21
We think of #digitalhumanities in a westernized context, but what about in our Arabic communities? Issues of gender in the Arab region are always a hot topic, and DH definitely provides us with insights to tackle gender representation within our Arab communities! #ENGL256BF21
Recently looked into how GIS is used for mapping. Honestly, it looks fun to just play around with and create a world for yourself 😂 Of course, we also can’t deny it’s perks in the #DH field for mapping data regarding #Gender notions and space allocation. #ENGL256BF21
@Ghadi_256B This was a really interesting notion. At first, I couldn’t quite get how something as general as “space” could be gendered, but after the readings and class discussions... who would’ve thought that this could be the case! #Gender#ENGL256B
Discovered that mapping is a #DH tool! Apart from mapping fictional book worlds, it is also used as a visually-appealing data representation of authors, societies, cultures etc. which helps us understand how space is distributed among different groups like #Gender! #ENGL256BF21
@SalemehDanielle True! I wouldn't have thought that "time" being dynamic & ever-changing & "space" being still and stable (from an astrophysics P.O.V, is it though?) could be gendered. But perhaps it's right to think of the ambiguity of space as indicative of the complexity of the female gender🧐
@Ghadi_256B Even though I haven't read Romeo and Juliet in a very long time, using this tool really helped me recall some details about the characters' personalities and dynamics! It was also great for comparing data across the different characters #ENGL256BF21
