#EndGunViolence - A sorority of sorrow that wishes it didn’t have to exist: We Got Us Moms. In 2020, Donnitta Sinclair Martin (@DonnittaMartin) suffered a tragedy when she lost her son Horace Lorenzo Anderson to gun violence. In the midst of her pain, she gained strength and has become a voice for the voiceless.

In 2021, she began We Got Us Moms (@WEGOTUSMOMS12), an organization which aims to support, serve and uplift women who have lost their children to gun violence, bringing healing and action to a space where it is sorely needed. This month, three years after the tragic murder of her son, she’s being honored by King County Council Member @CMGirmayZahilay with the MLK Jr. Distinguished Service Award on June 13th.

“Donnitta Sinclair took one of the darkest moments of any mother’s life and used her pain as fuel for change. She created a space for mothers who lost their children to gun violence, and has worked tirelessly to advocate for healing and for action to end gun violence. She fully embodies Dr. King’s call to service for others, and more than deserving of this award,” Zahilay said.

As Donnitta will be honored next week on the 13th, we take a look back to last year and the organization’s first in-person celebration, when Sinclair hosted mothers around the community and uplifted their stories and voices. You can see more in the video.

GRIEF STRICKEN MOTHER: After the victim impact statements were halted due to the emotional outburst Friday afternoon, Marcel Long was removed from the King County Superior Courtroom. But once things calmed down, Long was brought back in and had to face Donnitta Sinclair, Lorenzo Anderson's mother. The entire afternoon was unpredictable so I was constantly moving around for position. This is Sinclair's victim impact statement. It is worth a listen. Every young person caught up in the "thug life" should listen to this. Her message was for Long and other alleged "gang bangers" on #Seattle's streets, especially in the Central District.
