Keating Channel Pedestrian Bridge is taking shape!

With its signature “S” shaped suspended arch connected by an array of fanning cables that evokes the sun’s path during solstices and equinoxes, the bridge will provide a vital active transportation connection and serve as a striking gateway between downtown and Ookwemin Minising.

The Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, and the City of Toronto have each committed to advancing Waterfront East Transit – a landmark commitment to unlock housing, connect communities, and drive economic growth along Toronto’s eastern waterfront.

More than transit, this is the foundation for the next wave of our city’s future. Alongside the recently announced $975 million tri-government investment in enabling housing infrastructure on the waterfront, Waterfront East Transit will unlock access to new neighbourhoods like Quayside, Ookwemin Minising and beyond. This summer, the Inner Harbour connects east to west in a whole new way!

Waterfront Toronto, in partnership with the @cityoftoronto and the @TOPortAuthority, has selected York Bay Marine Services as the operator for the East‑West Water Shuttle Pilot - a seasonal service launching this June to test the feasibility of expanded water-based transit across Toronto’s Inner Harbour.

Running from June through September, the pilot will connect three stops:
⚓ Ookwemin Minising (Port Lands/Biidaasige Park) – new
⚓ Yonge Street Slip (Central Waterfront)
⚓ Portland Slip/Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport – new

The pilot advances a key recommendation from the Sea Bus Feasibility Study and supports the 2020 Marine Use Strategy, a long-term roadmap for expanding how people access and move through Toronto’s harbour.

More details, including schedules and fares, will be shared in the coming months as we get closer to launch.

Platform doors on the TTC would save lives and money. Why does it not have them?

Deaths caused by getting hit by TTC subway trains are almost always a suicide.

People getting pushed onto tracks is very rare. Between 2020 and 2025, there were three such reported incidents. Accidental falls are almost as rare.

It would cost $4.1 billion and take 20 years to install the doors across all 75 subway stations on Lines 1, 2 and 4.

Because different TTC stations were built at different times using different methods, it would require seven different designs across the whole network.

The city couldn’t install the barriers without “some pretty significant disruptions,” like station closures.

It’s rare in North America for platform edge doors to be installed because of higher costs coupled with the deteriorating conditions of older transit systems. San Francisco and New York City have cancelled multimillion-dollar projects for such reasons.

Weighing on the idea of platform doors is the cash-strapped TTC’s growing repair backlog — nearly $12 billion over the next 15 years, which has shown up in riders’ commutes as subway slow zones.

There needs to be dedicated funding for transit safety from higher levels of government.
