Developing and maintenance-dredging the 218-kilometer Escravos-to-Onitsha shipping channel is very FEASIBLE, TECHNICALLY VIABLE, PRODUCTIVITY CATALYTIC AND ECONOMICALLY OPTIMIZED EXECUTED UNDER A CREATIVE DESIGN AND EXECUTION STRUCTURE

This can be achieved by dredging and desilting it to just about 5meter depth (with good shoreline protections, and deploying and utilizing mostly self propelled , shallow-draft, wide-beam flat-bottom barges (5,000 DWT) only along the river the channel.

The Project Design and Arrangement will require significantly lower capital expenditure compared to DREDGING AND DESILTING the River Niger Channel to deep-sea vessel channels, which require a draft of over 9 to 12 meters. This design will create a sustainable marine logistics link between the Atlantic Ocean and the Industrial/ Commercial hub of Onitsha.

3. Siltation Dynamics: The Lower Niger experiences aggressive seasonal sedimentation. The self -propelled flat-bottom design eliminates the need to over-dredge to a depth of 9meters plus, saving billions in annual maintenance costs.

CAPITAL INFRASTRUCTURE REQUIRED

a). Capital Dredging: Initial excavation of bottleneck areas, specifically sandbars around the Escravos bar and structural bottlenecks between Warri and Onitsha.

b). River Training Works: Installing dynamic groynes and geotextile breakwaters at critical bends to narrow the flow, increase natural velocity, and minimize sand dropping back into the channel.

c). Navigational Aids: Solar-powered lit buoys, vessel traffic monitoring systems (VTMS), and automated water-level gauge networks to enable continuous 24-hour river piloting.
