New in the JDE: Joan Martínez follows 1.6M Peruvian students from age 12 to 22 to study how teachers' gender bias in grading affects outcomes. Some math teachers' grades favor boys more. A year with such a teacher widens the gender gap in formal jobs and pay🧵
The point of a conference is 1) to talk in person with folks you want to hear from that are hard to all get in one place, 2) to discuss specific ideas back-and-forth. Presentations, lectures, panels, firesides: all should be minimal except to the extent they serve 1 and 2. 1/2
1/ Together with Eaton–Kortum (2002) and Melitz (2003), I put Autor, Dorn & Hanson (2013) among the most influential trade papers of the past three decades. Precisely because of that influence, it has been intensely scrutinized.

Great new review article from Pascaline Dupas, with a new take on the Jeff Sachs vs AJR debate:
20+ years of rigorous, empirical evidence point to a strong role for geography in shaping econ development outcomes
I've just started working with a student who, before every meeting, sends me a @quarto_pub file with context, math, tables, and figures.
This should be norm. Efficient from the point of view of the student and mine. I highly encourage students (and coauthors) to work like that!
Reviewer 1 has already seen estimates from standard TWFE, stacked DD, and CSDID. All tell the same story. Now R1 wants to see Sun and Abraham, as well as Borusyak, Jaravel, and Spiess in the second round. I think this type of request should immediately disqualify the reviewer.
This is important evidence. But let me point out that it's possible to design teaching that prevents this.
Example: in my class, I give quizzes based on problem sets the day they are due (randomly choose 1 problem, change the details/numbers). Likely as a result, quiz, PSET, exam scores remain highly correlated.
Every college syllabus should include these graphs.
Use AI for homework, you will get it done faster and get a higher grade, and then get crushed on the exam.
Great article on the state of urbanization and urban planning in Africa.
Key stat: Africa is urbanizing at historically low income levels.
It hit 40% urbanization with 1/2 income of LatAm (that planner's paradise), and 1/4 of East Asia's.

The amount of casuals who’ve fallen for the Anti-Argentina/Messi propaganda is mad to me. People I respect on here, who are obviously have never watched a football match in their lives, coming out with the most random crap because they’ve been told to think that. It’s crazy.
We couldn’t find a usable set of boundaries for 10,000+ global cities, so we (@devdatalab) developed our own and made them open for research.
We were kind of shocked this didn’t exist already. A thread 1/
