Further, by testing male cues against water blanks we show that the flip in valence for calcium hydroxide exposed females is the result of an induced indifference toward conspecific male cues coupled with a strengthened preference for heterospecific cues.
Here we show that exposure to sublethal concentrations of calcium hydroxide cause female Xiphophorus birchmanni to prefer olfactory cues from males of the sister species X. malinche over conspecific cues. An effect that lasts more than two days but less than than ten
We then show that raising the pH using sodium hydroxide has a similar effect, but increasing the Ca++ ion concentration using an equimolar concentration of CaCl2 reduces conspefic mate preference but does not cause the same flip in valence.
