Encore faut-il ne pas caricaturer notre histoire pour justifier son projet politique. On peut déplorer le rapport Durham, avec raison, mais la réalité est que la mise en oeuvre de ce rapport a échoué, que L.H. La Fontaine, probablement un des plus grands politiciens de notre histoire, s'est allié avec Robert Baldwin (du Canada-Ouest) pour doter le Canada d'un gouvernement responsable et limiter ainsi les pouvoirs du gouverneur.
Pour ce qui est de la Confédération, celle-ci a doté les Canadiens-français de leur gouvernement, celui du Québec, qui leur a permis de prendre le contrôle de l'essentiel de leurs affaires, un gouvernement qui est plus puissant aujourd'hui qu'il ne l'a jamais été.
