We should be listening not to pundits but to scholars of authoritarianism, historians, journalists from other countries that have seen democracy erode. We must shed the hubris that tells us we know how to cover this because we’ve covered politics before, and the belief that we must maintain old norms even in the face of an unparalleled moment in US history.
