I think it's pretty clear that they took advantage of his mental condition, plus they threatened his family and told him that asserting his innocence is a crime (1001 violation). Plus the waiver of initial appearance is questionable.

I bet watching the video of the interview is much worse than the transcript because many times Cole was just losing it, including almost vomiting, talking to himself and needing a blanket.
