The barges enable distribution networks to do that earlier in the heat main lifecycle.

@Phoenix4419 @rcolvile I was favouring brevity. I think the obvious implication is both were similarly priced before - which was the case, noting variances in tax & price cap distortions.

Also, volatility has a real cost, outside of averages. Likewise geopolitical dependence for energy.

@L__Bow @rcolvile The barge arrangement isn’t a wasted cost either - the heat recovery plant is used for the main & pontoon connections become thermal storage for the network. The barges can be retained for that too, used for network resilience, or resold for LNG use on European waterways. 2/2

@L__Bow @rcolvile Good question - it’s actually cheaper accounting for demand ramp up & cost of capital. The barges allow early building connections, which enables early demand to scale before the trunk main arrives. This enables more rapid recovery of costs for the main, once completed. 1/2

@rcolvile Boilers & gas imports are not without issue. After the Ukraine invasion, UK gas / heating cost went up by c.250% - borne across taxpayers & billpayers. In Copenhagen, using extensive waste heat, they went up by 20%.
