@nvidia NVIDIA was founded to develop the GPU, a purpose-built Graphics Processing Unit for graphics workloads.

There is now a need for an Inference Processing Unit for AI inference workloads. Wouldn't the appropriate acronym be "IPU"? LPU doesn't quite make sense to me.
