PhD researcher working at Abertay University, Dundee. Primary interests surround Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in the field of sport science. #Physiology
Slightly delayed post but just wanted to say a huge thank you to the Nutrition Society #NSSummer23 for allowing me to present the findings of our research last week! A great conference with so many interesting researchers! Looking forward to next year already! @NutritionSoc
Strength and physical function predict adverse outcomes with ageing.
New data from 1396 men and women (~69 years of age) followed over 14.5 years showed:
1) Men with low quadriceps strength (<0.39 kg/m2 scaled to BMI) at baseline were 3x more likely to die
2) Women with slower walking speed (<0.72 m/s) at baseline were >2x more likely to die
3) In both sexes, 5 x sit-to-stand performance was the best predictor of falls

Combined ingestion of BCAA+CHO stimulates muscle protein synthesis post workout in trained men.
Congratulations to Sarah Jackman, all coauthors, and a cheers to Kev up above.
"Hot dang" would have been his response ... whatever that means!

Really happy to have won Abertay Universities postgraduate 3MT competition. It was also great to hear about so many interesting projects taking place in the Graduate School. Looking forward to the national quarter finals in July.
The progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass is a key hallmark of ageing.
But, the magnitude of loss varies between muscles.
In this study, age-related muscle loss was most pronounced in the thigh muscles (-24%) and the quadriceps (-30%) in particular.

A tricky read, but a really interesting paper related to assessing mitochondrial function with NIRS. We're using a similar method with our participants at Abertay University using MOXY monitors. Hopefully we'll have a manuscript ready to go soon.

For our 5 minutes with series we were able to catch up with Robert Seaborne
Read about his interest in muscles - both inside King's with research on muscle cells, and how he’s afflicted with the sports bug outside of King’s 💪

A Changing lives approach is key here! 👇🏻
This approach can not only help understand the barriers families face in their daily lives... it can help develop positive relationships between sport and people of all ages - something we can definitely get better at 👊🏻

Scotland is seeing a surge in cases as delta variant has taken over. Great though vaccination is, it hasn't broken the link between cases and hospital admissions. (cases at top, admissions below). It is dampened, but we need a 'vaccine plus' approach to keep people safe.
I'm delighted to say that it's just over a month until I begin my PhD at Abertay University. I'll be working with Dr John Babraj and Dr Sarah Cottin in exploring how Omega-3 PUFA's can alter the aging process in humans. If anyone has any tips or advice please feel free to share
Professor Naveed Sattar from @UofGICAMS @MetaMedTeam spoke to @SkyNews and gave his expert take on #Covid19 and why certain groups are more affected by the virus than others.
"There's something about this virus that affects more than just the lungs..."

A very comprehensive study 👌 The next stage of this research could be to examine the individual effect of each of the supplements used in the intervention group. Specifically, how do omega-3 and omega-6 supplements differ in preserving cognitive function

Over 1000 new reported UK #coronavirus deaths in past 3 days. Similar pattern/number to same days last week.
I realise this isn't what people want to hear, but I'm very concerned we're easing lockdown too fast. Please be very careful out there re social distancing.
.@physoc are hosting a FREE webinar “Making your research more accessible” on 2 Dec, 12:00-12:45. Particularly useful to researchers who have some PE experience, and who would like to take this to the next level. Registration closes 28 November: https://t.co/K3kxNonawW
