@POWERmagazine This is totally untrue. No power plant with CCS (or CCUS) is capturing anywhere near 90% of the CO2 it produces. No commercial scale gas-fired plant (CT or CC) is capturing any CO2 & neither of the two coal plants that capture CO2 has achieved that goal.

@BillKristol Maybe a stupid question but are there restrictions on how this money can be used? Can some be given to Ukraine? Spent on the U.S. border? Given to Israel and/or as humanitarian aid to Palestinians? If the answer to any of these Q's is yes, why hasn't Biden done it already?
@JesseJenkins I assume you must know that state and federal taxpayers are generally the same people and businesses - with maybe differences in tax rates. Now the $$ comes from the federal gov't instead of the state government. Still same subsidy to owners of nuclear plants from taxpayers.
@drvolts@JigarShahDC Ask him for some data on what the proposed SMRs will cost to build - like the TerraPower project, the GE-Hitachi 300 MW SMR. None of this cost information really is confidential. Jigar and DOE know it will lead to public opposition if they admit how expensive the SMRs will be.
@dorfman_p The total cost of the Vogtle nuclear project is ~ $36 billion. Georgia Power owns 45.7% of Vogtle. So its share of the total cost is approximately $16.4 billion. The local community is paying over $14 billion not $7.6 billion. Much of Vogtle's cost is already in rates.
@NucSafetyUCS@NuScale_Power The current estimated cost of a 6-module NuScale SMR is $9.3 billion in 2022$. Even allowing some economies of scale, the cost 2 12-module SMRs going to be well over $30 billion in 2022$ & even higher in as-spent year dollars. Who's going to risk that much $ on cryptocurrency.
@Guay_JG @KateAronoff Justin - the reason we may be losing the politics is that the oil&gas, coal and nuclear industries own one of the two major parties and have spend millions or even billions buying politicians. Oh and they own some media too. Not anything we've done or not done.

It owns over 21,600 MW of nuclear capacity and stands to make a lot of money from taxpayer subsidies with little risk. Adoption of the EPA rule would benefit Constellation by disadvantaging its competitors.
@JustinMikulka Plus there is an efficiency loss in producing hydrogen from natural gas + hydrogen leaks during transportation + CO2 emissions created when generating electricity needed to compress, store and transport the hydrogen. Using blue hydrogen to run power plants is a dumb idea.
@climate No, it's not opening at the perfect time. Typical of new nuclear reactors, it is years late (6-7 years in the case of Vogtle). If it had opened on time, it would still be operating now. Vogtle was a very bad idea when proposed by Georgia Power that has turned out even worse.
@GovNuclear@douglewinenergy What else happened about the NuScale design this month? Oh, the estimated cost of construction went from $5.3 to $9.3 billion and the target price of power went from $58/MWh to $89 and that reflects a $30/MWh subsidy from the IRA and $1.4 billion from DOE.
@NatBullard@amandakhurley Reusing existing plant sites is a good idea for any new generation not just nuclear. Using the transmission that remains after coal plants retire also make sense for the lower cost and faster to build options like wind and solar. Reusing coal sites won't make nuclear cheaper.
