I sense a concern by developers that they won’t be writing code any more, when in fact their role will be shifting upward to help in the writing of the requirements to a level of specificity sufficient for coding agents to generate the best possible implementations. I don’t believe business analysts will have this skill (at least initially) and developers need to think of themselves in more general terms as ‘technologists’ who are moving upward in the knowledge stack to meet the business analysts at a new interface that I don’t think exists today. With the advent of technology like 8090 Software Factory (SF) I predict the end of large ERP packages that are prevalent today.

Consider the costs. Today, Choosing and installing a packaged and complete ERP system is a major undertaking which entails documenting your business rules (which are probably not codified or controlled to the extent you would have for SF), more than likely with the help of a consulting company. You then typically need to engage that company to configure and install the apps for your needs which can involve considerable parameterization and usually customizations. Then there is the infrastructure the chosen package recommends or pay to run hosted.

Then, ongoing, there is the need to lobby the vendor to include functionality that you need added. This usually involves joining the vendor’s user group. If they don’t incorporate the functionality you’ve added in your customizations, you are on the hook to upgrade those customizations every new release and possibly add more. You never end up with the system you want when you want it.

With tech like SF you still need to codify your business rules but they are kept in one place and tracked, and they should become a keystone document for the entire company. Then it’s a matter of specifying your architectural choices in a blueprint, generating the work orders and unleashing the coding agents. This way you get exactly what you’ve specified and stay in control of your functional destiny and costs. New releases are on your schedule, not theirs and can be triggered by simply updating your requirements and/or blueprints.
