Better late than never - extremely excited to share that UAB's Brain Awareness Week with @Mcwane Science Center (and beyond!) was published! In it, we share a GitHub with activities and a forum to discuss them so that you can easily get them up and running wherever you are.

Pls RT: Join us at the 1st-ever conference on “Experience-Regulated Transcription”! Oct 5-7 2026 in Florida, with a fantastic line-up, @MEGNeuro @NadavAhituv @JasonSynaptic @BarcoLab @DayLabUAB @Gabel_Lab @apombo1 @SenguptaLab @Ryohei_Neuro @CreminsLab https://t.co/xOOF3Ft9H7

Our paper in @Nature today 🥳 We tracked 6,438 mice from puberty to death and mapped the genetics of *when* you die, not just whether a gene associates with lifespan.

We noticed something interesting (and frustrating) this winter because we had a number of cold spells here in Florida - when humidity drops, the food in our cages loses moisture and therefore weight, artificially increasing our food consumption measures. Anyone else noticed this?

[Sai Ma @saima_lab]

1/ Exciting news! We just released a preprint on a new single-cell technology, ME-seq, that maps DNA methylation, gene expression & chromatin accessibility—all in the same cell, at scale. And yes, it’s a LOT cheaper 🤑than current methods! 🧬 #SingleCell #Epigenetics

The 2025 CNC Retreat is in the books! 📖Thank you to the 220+ attendees for making this annual event a grand success. More photos coming soon. 😎

[Sasha L. Fulton @SashaLFulton]

So excited my doctorate work (and this excellent Preview by Yuhui Cui) is finally out @Neuron!

We used human MDD profiling + mouse manipulation studies to identify an epigenetic regulator linking OFC astrocyte reactivity -> neuronal hyperexcitability -> stress susceptibility.

[UAB CNC @UAB_CNC]

Last Chance to Register!📢 Registration will close this Friday for the 2025 UAB CNC Retreat.  This will be a fantastic two-day opportunity for UAB faculty and trainees to learn more areas of neuroscience research! 🧠Register today at, https://t.co/kza30i5j2m

[UAB CNC @UAB_CNC]

For our next Brain Chats, Dr. Kristina Visscher from UAB’s Dept of Neurobiology will bring the highly anticipated presentation “You CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Plasticity and the aging brain”. 🧠  Make plans to join us at Avondale Library on September 6th at 11AM! 😃

[UAB CNC @UAB_CNC]

Are you a faculty, student or researcher in the neurosciences at UAB? 📢 You won’t want to miss this event! Registration is still open for the 2025 CNC Retreat, but will be closing soon. Register today at, https://t.co/kza30i5j2m

After a sudden diagnosis of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) turned her world upside down, Abigail Boone found hope and healing at @uabpsychiatry with Dr. Aaron Fobian. Through innovative therapies like ReACT, she’s reclaiming her life.

Rumors are swirling on UAB campus about potential cuts/layoffs with uncertainty surrounding @NIH funding, and now @SenKatieBritt & 13 other GOP senators publicly pushing OMB to release already-appropriated NIH funding

@KLabGPCR Very cool work, congratulations!

What’s better than a one-channel #Miniscope? 🥁 A TWO-CHANNEL Miniscope!

Our new Miniscope2C is a dual-channel, open-source Miniscope that lets you record 2 fluorescent signals simultaneously in freely moving animals.

Double-blind placebo controlled trial (led by @UABNews faculty Dr. Timothy Garvey) demonstrates >20% weight loss with co-administration of cagrilintide (which targets amylin receptors) with semaglutide (which targets GLP-1 receptors).

@vipintukur Another adult-onset neurological disorder that appears to be caused by a virus.

Shingles - VZV
Alzheimer's - VZV, HSV
Multiple sclerosis - EBV

I've long felt that we should be looking at human brain sequencing data at reads that do not map to the human genome.

[Justus @JustusKebschull]

Excited to share the first 2(!) preprints from the Kebschull Lab. The amazing @HyopilKim developed MAPseq2 & POINTseq and used them to map the dopaminergic cells of VTA and SNc. tl;dr MAPseq2=10x cheaper, 4x better; POINTseq=easy cell type specific barcoding; DA neurons=very cool

[Katie Galloway @GallowayLabMIT]

So you want to change transgene expression: just change your promoter, right? Changing the promoter increases RNA and thus protein levels. What more could be happening?

[1/n] Well, promoters don’t just set RNA levels; they uniquely transform how RNAs are transmitted into protein levels. 🧵
