Irreverent, real-world tips for first time filmmakers, from the perspective of the crew who sees the mistakes up close. DM or tweet yours at me. #DearFilmmakers
Ok I have to say something bc it’s been bothering me. I worked on a show where the AD was a horrible person. He chummed up to the Producers and treated WOMEN like crap. I had a steady stream of women coming to me to complain. 1/
And sure, we all have some ride or die friends willing to work for free or defer pay. That’s one thing. But the second you ask someone to give up 12-14 hours a day for your vision, no real chance of leveling up, and no money - what are you offering them? Why is it ok to ask that?
One thing I never see talked about in the “shoot it on your phone” debate: paying your cast and crew. Indy crews aren’t disposal and they shouldn’t world for nothing. Even if you can only afford per diem, making a movie for “free” by paying $0 disrespects the work of your team.
While everyone is still talking about set COVID safety;

DearFilmmakers: Don't assume scope creep. Don't request for your crew to do shit that isn't their job because you didn't budget for more personnel. It's not "a favor", it's disrespectful to your people.

There are a lot of commercials, music videos, NU productions out there getting by without doing any crew Covid testing. This is irresponsible, unsafe, and done solely to save money because the corps that are paying prod companies for our creativity won’t pay for our safety.
#DearFilmmakers: if you want to win an Oscar for Best Picture, you can't make your movie with an all-white-male-able-bodied-cishet crew.
Better see to your hiring practices.

If we are going to bring crews back to set - especially in LA- we need daily testing - 12 hour turnaround- and best in class PPE, HVAC filtration, and contact tracing devices. What’s happening currently isn’t enough. Studios need to provide the absolute best for their crews.
