Excited that a project we have been working on for many months was just published! A new Vital Topics forum, on “How Academic Diversity Is Transforming Scientific Knowledge in Biological Anthropology”, is now available in @AmAnthroJournal. https://t.co/gmkjXNiic6
.@UConn researchers join an international team to integrate diverse voices into the scientific practices of ancient DNA research and foster better collaboration with Indigenous communities. #IndigenousPeoplesDay

It appears things within @SAAorg have not changed... Because I criticized the organization's handling of #SAA2019 in my responses to a recent survey, an email inadvertently FWD'ed to me reveals that I am "involved/engaged, however probably not in the way we [the SAA] would like."
Today we’re looking at a sequence from our mtDNA! We inherit mtDNA from our mother, their mothers, & so on. Would it be okay for me to publish this data as just my own? Should I ask my mom & her siblings as well? What about full genome sequencing? #SINGUSA2019#mtDNA#Bioethics
On day 5 of #SINGUSA2019, we analyzed the mtDNA sequences we generated in the lab earlier this week! We also discussed the limits of what DNA can tell us about identity, ancestry, and tribal belonging, and considered issues of tribal sovereignty. @SINGConsortium @MalhiRipan
Cultural pride and renewal are protective factors against some of the negative effects of our environment. Epigenetics can be a powerful tool to change our narrative and demonstrate how our unique differences in culture are important for our health. #SINGUSA2019
- @AmyBombayPhD
I am really grateful to @AmyBombayPhD for demonstrating the potential for #Epigenetics in #Indigenous communities as a potential TOOL for reaffirming our narratives. But “tool” as keyword because it is not for VALIDATION of our knowledge. So complex and important! #SINGUSA2019
#SINGUSA2019 workshop is a top news story in @NPR stations across Illinois! Featuring our participants and @MalhiRipan@kstsosie, highlighting the importance of providing #Indigenous spaces for discussing #genomics in our communities. Ahéhée to @CTHerman: https://t.co/cBGXvdPuMX
On day 3 of #SINGUSA2019, @emiliahsc, @science_punx, and @AHolliso lead a bioinformatics lab exploring human genetic diversity using public data, as we also consider the racist & colonial ideologies that underlie many pop gen models & have shaped the production of these datasets.
Pilar Ossorio on contentious nature of broad consents in projects such as HGDP for #Indigenous ppl. “Informed consents cannot bear the weight” of all the #ethical decisions re: storage, access, de-identification, etc. @NIH has to do better in #data sharing policies. #SINGUSA2019
The politics of our age demand that we counteract ‘scientific’ racism not only with rigour, depth and empathy, but also without fear, and Gavin Evans takes no prisoners in “Skin Deep," writes @AngelaDSaini in a book review. https://t.co/OgwBDa9JA2
A great day at #SINGUSA2019. Discussing the hard points on historical trauma, boarding school era, and #epigenetics. With @AmyBombayPhD @cricketcrocker @NDN_Resilience @Smbilliot, which is the theme of this year’s workshop at Univ. of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
