@JRTomlinAuthor "In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness & humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of a tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature w/ hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect..."
That's all for today's tweets about #DeclarationofArbroath nobles. But, in truth, the story of the Declaration went on throughout April 1320, and beyond. We'll continue to share snapshots on this thread as we move towards publication of https://t.co/eeNyJ4sBs2 at the end of April
Thread: Today we're celebrating #Arbroath700 by tweeting about Scots who made #DeclarationofArbroath in 1320. First up: Robert the Bruce. He didn't actually put his seal on the Declaration, as he sent his own letter to the Pope (now lost) #ConqueredByNoOne https://t.co/eeNyJ4sBs2
Completing hat-trick of nobles who sealed #DeclarationofArbroath 700 years ago today (generally considered good thing) before being tried for treason 700 years ago in August (generally considered not so good) #infamyinfamy. Alex Wood tells David's story in https://t.co/eeNyJ4sBs2
@JRTomlinAuthor I guess it depends on whether you view hanging, drawing and quartering from a 14th or 21st century perspective? ... which is a fascinating topic itself in philosophy of history. These pics were all intended to be a bit provocative - thanks for rising to the challenge!

@JRTomlinAuthor Thanks @JRTomlinAuthor: chapter's more nuanced than publisher's scurrilous Twitter-take! But I'll also feed your comments on through our editor @neiledinburgh who's revising chapters as we speak. Looking forward to getting yr Douglas books into @bibliogarage for Covid-reading.
@JRTomlinAuthor I haven't read your trilogy yet, but will order them straight away! Do you agree with Kirsty/Fiona Watson's take? https://t.co/TKxo72Z9zm
Another great thread on #DeclarationofArbroath. Great to see different historians coming at the topic from slightly different angles, including our own #BaronsBiographers.
Today, 6th of April 2020, marks the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath (1320), one of the most important documents in Scottish history.
Here's a wee thread, from someone who had to study this document at university, in Lisbon, as part of my degree in History:
@CrossgateCentre Great to share some quotes other than the most famous line! I particularly like "conquered by no one, even the most barbarous tribes ..." 😊 https://t.co/RLUOYttGJM
#ForFreedomAlone are the most famous words in the #DeclarationofArbroath. But there are other strong lines, too, including #ConqueredByNoOne, which gives us the title of our new book, due out in late April https://t.co/eeNyJ4sBs2
The high point of 1320 was the #DeclarationofArbroath, made on 6 April. The low point was the 'Black Parliament' in August. Prepare for hanging, drawing and quartering in @alex_m_orr's chapter of https://t.co/eeNyJ4sBs2 #Arbroath700
