He designed it to be able to put up a decent fight against them.
The first suit is to protect him incase a Viltrumite smashes the first one.
Also to use one suit as a drone while he escapes in the second one if it comes to it.

Mark fought Nolan, even though he lost.
For Viltrumites, the more you use your abilities, the stronger you get.
The more you fly, the faster you become.
After facing Nolan and seeing what is coming, Mark had to train a lot.
