New #paper. Tons of important conversations among knowledge workers never make it into the scientific record - all we get are sanitized final "papers", cut down to match a journal's max allowed length. Recordings (like https://t.co/g4PXrOZ0bZ) help, but we can do better. Here's our attempt: @karina__kofman organized, many contributors in the discussion.

The journal Organisms (https://t.co/7vhwS95H0Y) was brave enough to agree to this idea: they published a transcript, very minimally edited (i.e., mostly unaltered) of a conversation among some great people. It's the discussion thread accompanying our recent paper (https://t.co/ITfC2yl9M6) on definitions of life. Check it out - all of this would normally have disappeared, buried in people's email databases and not available to the community. How many other amazing conversations could be mined by students, future AI's, etc.?
So to say: the "method" , as taught, can't be the real engine, because if it were a mechanical procedure anyone following it would produce great science, and they don't.Method is necessary but not sufficient; the differentiator is taste in choosing problems.Skepticism toward formal abstraction is one of the foundation of science.
@naval@FutureJurvetson 100%.. Most of what we "know" is fashion and convention, and much of it will turn out wrong. The real skill is learning to learn. scientific success is inseparable from courage, working on important problems, tolerating ambiguity, and managing one's own psychology.
Anthropics Dario wants to regulate AI like we regulate drugs. In the same essay, he wants to deregulate drugs - because of AI.
The 2nd argument quietly assumes away the thing the 1st is built to protect.
Why so many holes in the theory? was expecting deeper thinking.

@usvc_@cyantist Women talking money and power is still a stigma. The VC space is also filled with many men.. love the fact that there is a opening on that.
@avlok@RohanCornelio@avlok would also love a clarification for EU taxpayers to have a chance to be a part of this. If you can share the directions - I would be interested.
@kamalravikant I always wondered why Angellist never opened such a opportunity before. In EU we had such instances in a place called companisto. I am glad @naval finally took at it. If he did it during Airchat times- we could have talked so much about it.
One thing missing is: European side
