Her family sued and won nearly $19 million. Schwartz never paid.

Schwartz ran a $39 million tax fraud scheme through his nursing home chain — money that should have gone to employee payroll taxes. He didn’t donate to a campaign. He paid a lobbyist $100,000, filed on federal disclosure forms, for one stated purpose: “federal presidential pardon advocacy.”

Three months into his sentence, Trump pardoned him. The Coulsons still haven’t seen a dime.

Un ragazzo di quattordici anni esce di casa. Non c’è combattimento. Non c’è scontro in corso. Un pattuglia gli spara. Cade. Resta a terra.
Per quaranta, quarantacinque minuti un’intera compagnia di soldati gli sta intorno. Chiacchierano. Qualcuno fuma. Il ragazzo, ancora vivo, spinge il berretto verso di loro per far capire che respira, che chiede aiuto. Un soldato gli tira il berretto indietro. Quando grida, la risposta è un calcio. Poi qualcuno lascia cadere una pietra accanto al corpo: il copione è già pronto. Era un lanciatore di sassi. Non importa che non ci sia la minima prova che stesse facendo altro che uscire di casa.
La madre tenta di raggiungerlo. Le sparano addosso. Un’ambulanza della Mezzaluna Rossa si avvicina. Un puntatore laser viene messo in mezzo alla fronte del conducente. L’autista indietreggia. Il ragazzo continua a dissanguarsi. Nessuno dei soldati, tutti addestrati al primo soccorso, gli mette un laccio, gli ferma un’emorragia, gli dà un sorso d’acqua. Quando è morto, se lo portano via. Il cadavere non è stato restituito. Lo tengono.
Questa non è una “tragedia della guerra”. Questa è una scelta. Una scelta ripetuta, osservata, filmata, documentata. Non è un incidente di un plotone isolato: è il prodotto di una cultura militare che ha interiorizzato l’idea che un bambino palestinese a terra non sia un ferito da soccorrere, ma un problema da gestire, un corpo da inscenare, un cadavere da sequestrare.
Il diritto internazionale non è ambiguo. L’occupante ha l’obbligo di proteggere i civili, di soccorrere i feriti, di non ostacolare le ambulanze, di non usare i corpi come ostaggi. Qui ogni norma è stata violata in sequenza, con calma, sotto gli occhi di decine di uomini in uniforme. Non in un bombardamento confuso. In un vicolo, a pochi metri, per tre quarti d’ora.
La domanda non è soltanto cosa abbiano fatto quei soldati. È chi li ha formati, chi li comanda, chi parla dopo e chi tace. Un esercito che permette che un quattordicenne muoia dissanguato mentre i suoi uomini chiacchierano non è un esercito che ha “perso il controllo”. È un esercito che ha deciso che quella vita non conta. I comandi che non indagano, che non processano, che non restituiscono il corpo, non stanno coprendo un eccesso: stanno confermando una politica.
Si può discutere di strategia, di minacce, di 7 ottobre, di tunnel, di ostaggi. Quella discussione non cancella i quarantacinque minuti. Non cancella il calcio al berretto. Non cancella il laser sulla fronte dell’autista. Non cancella la pietra posata accanto a un moribondo per fabbricare una colpa. Chi guarda quei minuti e trova ancora giustificazioni non sta difendendo la sicurezza di nessuno. Sta dichiarando che certe agonie sono accettabili, purché il ragazzo sia palestinese.
Non è sadismo individuale isolato. È deumanizzazione istituzionalizzata. È l’abitudine a trattare un bambino come un oggetto da lasciare a terra e poi da nascondere. Finché chi ha sparato, chi ha guardato, chi ha puntato il laser e chi ha dato gli ordini resterà impunito, quella scena non sarà un’anomalia. Sarà il metodo.

In June 1998, a devastating apartment fire in Hartford, Connecticut, nearly claimed the life of 5-year-old Josibelk "Josi" Aponte.

Pulled unconscious from the smoke-filled building, she was placed into the arms of Hartford police officer Peter Getz.

With no ambulance immediately available, Getz climbed into a police cruiser and performed CPR on the little girl as another officer raced them to the hospital, helping save her life.

Josi survived the tragedy, though the fire also took the life of a family member.

As the years passed, she never forgot the officer who fought to keep her alive. Nearly two decades later, after reconnecting with Getz, she invited him to a milestone he had made possible.

In May 2016, Peter Getz proudly watched as the once-fragile child he carried from a deadly fire crossed the stage to graduate from Eastern Connecticut State University.

The reunion was a powerful reminder that acts of courage can echo for a lifetime, and that sometimes the greatest reward for saving a life is getting to witness the life that person goes on to build.

A police chief in Oshkosh, Wisconsin caught Flock lying to his city council, and killed the $8 billion surveillance company's contract less than a day after the council had approved it.

Here's how it happened.

The night before, Oshkosh's council was set to renew its deal with Flock Safety, the license plate camera company backed by a16z and Tiger Global.

One council member asked the Flock rep a plain yes-or-no question. Does this system build a heat map of everywhere a specific car travels over time?

Flock's rep said no.

The council believed him and voted 5 to 2 to renew. By the next morning, Chief Dean Smith's own officers had told him that answer was false.

So he pulled up the system himself. He watched it generate the exact heat map Flock had just sworn it couldn't make.

Then he walked into an emergency meeting and said it out loud: "Because of this misrepresentation, I can no longer recommend Flock."

Understand what a heat map is, because it's the whole trick.

Flock sells cities a tidy little story. A car drives by, we snap a photo, we read the plate, that's all it is.

But the same system can quietly average out where your car goes day after day and paint your routine onto a map.

Not one snapshot at one corner. Your pattern. Where you sleep, where you work, where you keep going back and how often.

A Flock employee later admitted on the record that the software does exactly that.
So the pitch and the product are two different things. The company wins the contract selling a plate reader, then sits on a moving map of your life.

The only reason Oshkosh caught it was one skeptical question and a police chief who bothered to check the answer.

The vote to rescind was 7 to 0. Unanimous.

Flock called the whole thing "one small misconception" from a long meeting and said it was disappointed nobody let it explain.

A surveillance company worth eight billion dollars got caught lying about whether it maps where you drive. Its defense was that the lie was small.

Oshkosh got one honest answer by accident. Congress can make it the rule.
