My stance:
AI for coding/software developement/software improvement with knowledgeable engineers behind it = good
AI for creative arts such as visual/music, data gathering/privacy invasion/monitoring = bad
Yes, I want to see AI fixing important software bugs and improving software as a whole.
No, I don't want to see a chihuahua edited into a slapping contest
Yes, I want to see AI improve things like 3d modeling and rendering
No, I don't want to see AI generated textures or other art assets that real people could make and stylize like no other.
I really think that is the line between slop and a useful tool. Another analogy I saw that made a lot of sense to me was this -- A guy hires a web developer to make a web site. The web developer uses AI assistance to make the site, and discloses it to the guy. The guy says "why did you use AI, I could've done that myself". The developer says "If you designed a web site using AI, and I designed a web site using AI, who do you think is going to make a better web site?". I agree there.. the guy with more experience developing web sites is going to make a better one with AI assistance because they -know- what to look for when making changes/modifications (and possible security holes). I feel these days -that- is where being a software engineer is headed. You still have to know your shit, and not knowing it while serving slop will probably end up landing you a lawsuit or worse in the long run.
I dont care that the new EGS launcher is vibe coded. I dont care of they are using GE-Proton internally. Someone at Epic had to present these ideas and get them green lit, and regardless of reasoning be it for competition or for compatibility, an effort for linux compatibility is being made, and I can appreciate that. It's more than most have done in the past and I welcome it. I want linux to grow, not for people to chase growth out.
