@du_dot_ie@planetofdub@EamonRyan Yes, the more interconnection the better. They help to lower costs and give another import option, but are not as reliable at times of peak demand as we'd like
They also help integrate larger power plants, including nuclear, into our relatively small grid. A win-win
@planetofdub@EamonRyan That's a popular view. France are not likely to send their cheapest and cleanest energy to us instead of using it themselves
It's not as much about Nuclear or Renewables as it is about finding the best way to get us off gas and coal - and that's best done using all the options
@du_dot_ie@EamonRyan Nuclear energy would almost certainly result in lower bills, without State or any other subsidy. The power plant could also pay for the cost of regulation and licensing, if the State wanted it to.

Interesting trend
In 2023, average electricity demand in Ireland (the black line) increased as the temperature fell - as expected
Wind energy output (the blue bars) tended to increase as the temperature dropped, but then decreased when it got really cold here
In Ireland, on days of <5°C, wind output averaged 1.3GW, 20% lower than the output on milder 5-10°C days.
Moreover, on these cold days electricity demand was 6% higher.
