It's so much easier to call someone a mad man than to look at the facts behind the situation.

Fact 1) Eastern Ukraine has been in civil war for 8 years, resulting in roughly 14,000 deaths. This war is on the basis that a large number of people there want to join Russia.

Fact 2) NATO have been expanding the past 30 years closer to Russia's Borders, despite initially giving their word they would not.

Fact 3) The Minsk Agreements were designed to stop the fighting in Eastern Ukraine. Both agreements failed. The fighting continued.

Fact 4) Putin has threatened both Finland and Sweden not to join NATO. They are close to Russia's borders.

It should be clear to anyone that this conflict is about stopping the expansion of NATO on Russia's doorstep.

The Minsk Agreements would have guaranteed this. Therefore, it makes no sense, as some have suggested, for Putin to sabotage these agreements when they would have guaranteed the one thing he wants.

If the fighting in Ukraine stopped, this would leave a wide path open for Ukraine to join NATO. The US government have already meddled in Ukraine, when their interference enabled the overthrow of a democratically-elected president.

If Ukraine joined NATO, knowing full well there are a large number of rebels in the country, it puts Putin in an extremely dangerous position. It would not take much for the US to order an attack on Russia on the pretext of defending a NATO country.

Any leader would be insane to even allow the possibility of this to happen.

Therefore, with 8 years of failed agreements, a civil war that saw no end in sight, the threat of an expanding NATO and no written agreement that Ukraine would not join NATO, I fail to see what other option was left apart from war. The West have failed to give guarantees that NATO would not expand, they have repeatedly broken their word, and the US under Obama and Biden has gone so far as to meddle in the country's internal politics. Invading Ukraine is the one thing that would guarantee it does not join NATO and I suspect this is the line of thinking Putin is taking, rather than media rhetoric that he has simply 'gone mad'. Mad with rage, perhaps, but insane? I doubt it.
