Good communication with members is obviously important. Right now, PCS makes this harder than it should be.
Branches are not supposed to keep local lists of members’ emails or phone numbers. Instead, we are supposed to send any message to a Full-Time Officer (FTO), and they then use the national system to get that out.
This causes problems:
Delays – Messages take a while to go out.
Possible blocks – If the FTO disagrees with the wording or priority, messages can be held up.
Democracy – In a member-led union, elected branch reps should be able to contact members directly.
PCS, that is Left Unity, has said for years that it will create a system where branches can write a message and have that sent securely to all members in the branch, using the official database. That system, long promised hasn’t arrived yet.
Until this is put in place, branches will have to keep local lists. We need the promised communication system delivered as soon as possible. No more delay - let's get it done.
'The meeting began with Fran speaking (as is her wont in such ‘consultative’ fora) for about 30 minutes (half the allotted time). She detailed motions A383 and A2’s demands, her talks with the Cabinet Office, our academic research and the fiscal as well as moral case for pay restoration, and detailed some of the pay settlements which delegated bargainers have achieved. Effectively this section of the meeting was a dramatic reading of the 11 August branch bulletin on the subject (BB-29-25)'. To read more go here: https://t.co/Fv80REHsaQ
The NEC will decide based on the meetings. But there's been months of inactivity so members are coming to this cold. Also there is no strike plan for them to consider. So it is likely we will get negative/lukewarm responses. We discuss tomorrow if that's what LU want.
From News from the NEC – July 2025 'The NEC however approved a ‘ballot-ready strategy’ and has agreed to a process of members’ meetings from mid-August..'. So when will the ballot be, if there will be one? ADC decided on a ballot no later than mid September. That won't happen.
"The statement’s intent is sickeningly clear, while seeking to obfuscate behind legalese; it instructs trans members not to use the toilets they are used to. [...] This position is legally ignorant as well as politically cowardly"

Coming to @pcs_union ADC in Brighton? Join our public fringe meeting, 12:45 tomorrow at the Old Ship Hotel to discuss building the union we deserve - a democratic, fighting union!
That advice in fact was sought. And why? LU has a poor position on Trans rights. They seek a compromise between gender critical views and Trans rights. There is none. This is the time to choose sides. We choose to support Trans and non binary colleagues.
The General Secretary and President have issued a note to all delegates about toilet provision in the Brighton centre! Not about pay, job cuts but toilets. They claim this is on the basis of legal advice. But the lawyers didn't ring them up and say here's our advice.
As Left Unity lack ideas as to how the union might win for members, they have decided to engage in some good, ol’ fashioned pork barrel politics. Therefore LU are proposing, should they win the election, to pay members back some of the levy money. https://t.co/l5el5Cg1aa
"In short, Ofgem has a discipline problem. It’s not coming from our members. It’s coming from the employer."
Read our Branch Briefing for the latest on our official dispute with our employer. We're ready to negotiate fully with a view to reaching agreement.
And they are the cause of that. IL in contrast to LU, wants PCS to be a super majority union. But we can't be with LU in charge. The NEC election is about whether we stay weak under LU, or seek to grow under CfC leadership. Vote Coalition for Change for a strong PCS.
LU say, rightly, the real enemy is the employer. But we notice that Labour are getting an easy ride from PCS. That's because LU are cosying up to Labour to get concessions. US unions say, bargain, don't beg. LU are begging because they know we are a minority union and weak.
I am in those talks, and hopefully they will deliver results, but nobody should underestimate the determination of the FM workers to take further action, if the talks prove abortive. The onus is on the FM companies and the government to resolve this dispute.
#PCS members in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) are being balloted for strike action over office closures, recruitment and office attendance policies.
Their department is the responsibility of deputy prime minister Angela Rayner MP, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and face of the government's Employment Rights Bill that promises to improve workers' terms and conditions.

"We know that LU will claim they stopped the levy, despite the facts, but what they won’t do is propose what should replace it."
