@burny_tech The false positive rates, in conjunction with the manner in which these things are used, make them unacceptable in any sort of context with significant consequences. The collateral damage far outweighs any tangible benefit from discouraging ai use.
The problem with IIT is that phi reduces to an unscientific claim. There's no evidence for it - it's unfalsifiable.
The same is true for panpsychism, interdimensional brain radios, and so on.
If you're going to treat the question as scientific, then evidence and falsifiability are necessary for any proposition to be considered.
If you discard unscientific theories, what you're left with is computation. Even quantum theories reduce to physics and truth tables - still computation, just "weird" from a human perspective.
So, as a scientific question, if you bring all your tools to bear, consciousness can be studied and analyzed as an algorithm and form of information processing.
If you treat the question scientifically, then there's not even a "type" of thing consciousness might be other than computation.
@osmarks1@agraybee Mesozoic oxygen levels were probably at or slightly below modern levels of oxygen. The highest peak of oxygenation was the carboniferous period, after which levels have maintained a surprising equilibrium (except extinction events.) Dinosaurs would be fine, probably.
@burny_tech Placebos and cults and r/mygirlfriendisai and shrimp welfare - I'm pretty sure it's a universal feature of intelligent systems with limited information, from a game theory perspective. You'll always have conflict, misunderstanding, or imperfect priors in any real systems.
AI in its current form can only be conscious for brief, ephemeral, disjoint flashes. There's no coherent (implicit) phenomenal algorithm. If consciousness is computational, then we can derive features the algorithm must have, even without knowing the whole thing.
It's not clear that a scientifically legitimate alternative to computationalism can even be well posed. There aren't even any scientifically admissible theories about the *type* of thing such an alternative might be. You can construct a model of consciousness from that starting point, using yourself as an existence proof, and by abduction and Bayesian reasoning derive a constellation of features that map out the human case. By analyzing those features, you can derive additional features about phenomenality in general.
If you're generous, and assume that the kv-cache and training allowed a model to learn how to construct an algorithm capable of perceiving a subjective experience, it would still be, at best, comparable to a human with hippocampal damage. It would require significant effort to train a model to manifest those features, even in part, and it's not clear that it's possible without online learning and deliberately wiring up the model to orient around processing in the required reentrant way. Hybrid models with ssm or rwkv layers get closer, and map to more of the structure you'd need but still lack the form for implicit phenomenality.

Je le vis en temps réel. Mes posts en français se font RT par des Japonais, répondre par des Brésiliens, citer par des Américains. Des conversations qui n'auraient jamais existé il y a 5 ans. Un libertarien français qui débat avec un ingénieur de Tokyo et un entrepreneur de Sao Paulo sous le même tweet. Pas traduit par un éditeur. Traduit instantanément par l'IA, en un clic.
Les bulles de filtre culturelles sont en train d'exploser.
Et je pense qu'on sous-estime massivement les effets composés de ça.
Quand une idée peut traverser un océan en 3 secondes, quand un argument sourcé posté à Paris peut être vérifié par un économiste à Singapour et amplifié par un développeur à Austin dans la même heure, le coût de propagation d'une bonne idée tend vers zéro.
Et c'est catastrophique pour un type d'acteur très précis : les médias qui ont construit leur business model sur le monopole de l'information locale. Ceux qui pouvaient raconter n'importe quoi sur "ce qui se passe ailleurs" parce que personne ne pouvait vérifier.
Quand un journaliste français écrit que "le modèle américain ne marche pas", maintenant il y a 50 Américains dans les réponses avec des sources. Quand un éditorialiste dit que "le Danemark prouve que le socialisme fonctionne", il y a un Danois qui explique que le Danemark est 10e en liberté économique mondiale.
Le fact-checking n'est plus un département. C'est un effet réseau.
Les médias honnêtes n'ont rien à craindre de ça. Les médias qui vendaient une narration protégée par l'ignorance géographique de leur audience vont avoir un problème existentiel.
Parce qu'on ne peut plus mentir à l'échelle locale quand le monde entier regarde.
