In 1875, a 19-year-old Black jockey named Oliver Lewis made history in the Kentucky Derby, then quietly disappeared.
Lewis became the first jockey to ever win the Kentucky Derby, America’s longest-running sporting event. At the time, the race was watched by 10,000 spectators and held at the Louisville Jockey Club, now known as Churchill Downs.
What makes his victory even more striking is that he wasn’t supposed to win.
Lewis rode Aristide, one of two horses entered by the same owner. The favored horse, Chesapeake, was expected to take the prize. Lewis was reportedly instructed to set the pace and tire the field so Chesapeake could surge late.
But things didn’t go as planned.
As the race unfolded, Chesapeake fell far behind. In the final stretch, Lewis found himself neck and neck with another horse, Volcano. He seized the moment. Aristide pulled away and won by two lengths.
With that decision, Oliver Lewis became the first Kentucky Derby champion.
At that first Derby, 13 of the 15 jockeys were African American, as was Aristide’s trainer, Ansel Williamson—facts rarely mentioned in popular accounts of the sport today.
Despite his success, Lewis would never ride in the Kentucky Derby again. He retired after that season for reasons that remain unknown.
He later worked as a laborer, then as a bookmaker when it was legal in Kentucky. He raised a family of six children and died in 1924 at the age of 68.
The man who won the very first Derby helped build the sport—yet history nearly left him behind.
What is happening in the Michigan senate race is going too far, in my opinion. Personally, I wanted Gretchen Whitmer to run for the Michigan senate seat. But since she didn’t run for it, I was indifferent about who became the Democratic nominee in the Michigan senate race. The Democratic voters chose Abdul, and we need to respect that. It’s very unfortunate to see some moderate Democrats doing the exact same thing republicans do: fear-mongering. As someone who is a moderate Democrat, I know what’s at stake in this election. Democrats who would rather see Rogers get elected have no political literacy. It’s imperative for the Democrats to win the senate to block Trump’s judges from getting confirmed. I know Abdul will block Trump’s agenda, but Rogers definitely won’t. I have been involved in many political campaigns in the past and know how politics works in this country, You don’t always get 100 percent of what you want. I agree Abdul has made some controversial comments, but no one is perfect. Don’t let Republican fear-mongering influence how you vote. Just remember who is going to stand up to Trump and who is going to be a Trump stooge when you vote.
Way too many males of all ages have become WAY TOO FUCKING COMFORTABLE hitting or smacking women away. That shit has got to stop.
Who is this motherfucking #Duke player and how do we put enough pressure on the coach to make sure he gets kicked off the team???
Costco blade tenderizes its steaks. The label says so, and it's the reason a Costco steak comes with a cooking temperature printed on it.
Before the steak hits the case it goes through a machine that pushes rows of thin blades into the meat to cut the muscle fibers, so a Choice steak eats more tender than it would on its own. You can't see the cuts once it's done, except sometimes in the fat on a ribeye.
The catch is what rides in on the blades. E. coli lives on the outside of a cut of beef, which is why a rare steak is normally safe. The sear kills what's on the surface and the inside was never exposed. Push that surface into the middle with a blade and rare isn't safe anymore. That's why USDA says a mechanically tenderized steak gets cooked to 145F with a 3 minute rest, the same number as a pork chop, where a steak that wasn't tenderized carries no cooking instruction at all.
USDA figures about 11% of the beef sold in the US is mechanically tenderized, and since 2016 the words have to be on the label. Costco started printing them in 2012, after an E. coli outbreak in Canada was traced to its blade tenderized steaks. The ground beef isn't tenderized. If the package in your cart says blade tenderized or mechanically tenderized, cook it through.
ICE run over U.S. citizen riding his bike—break his arm.
Agents handcuff him behind his back without calling paramedics.
They inflict even more injuries—send him to the hospital in serious condition.
Then agents detain another U.S. citizen—for yelling at them on the sidewalk.
Man with the broken arm's daughter says he was hit on his e-bike by an unmarked car.
He was then tased twice and pinned to the ground—currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Multiple ICE vehicles were running through stop signs—speeding the wrong way down one-way streets.
All on a weekend afternoon with kids playing outside.
Incident occurred near the intersection of East 56th Street & Elm Avenue in Long Beach, California.
Stop ICE Net doesn't have an account on this platform—so posting first full length, English translated, and credited video here to help raise awareness.
@MikeRogersForMI@MeshawnMaddock Abdul has no connection to 9/11. But you denied funding for 9/11 first responders nine times. And now you’re exploiting the 9/11 victims to make false political attacks. https://t.co/Znjmdh2b6Z

When we get back the gavels in the Michigan House, I’ll be investigating Kristi Rogers and calling for an oversight committee hearing on this campaign activity by the Mike Rogers campaign for allegedly violating Michigan campaign finance laws.
