J. J. Thomson won the 1906 Nobel Prize for discovering the electron. Remarkably, several of the young scientists he trained or mentored at Cambridge, including Ernest Rutherford, Charles Wilson and Francis Aston, later won Nobel Prizes of their own. Even Thomson's son George won a Nobel Prize, making Thomson one of the most influential scientific mentors in history.

In 1897, J. J. Thomson shattered the idea that atoms were indivisible. By bending cathode rays with electric and magnetic fields, he showed that they were made of tiny negatively charged particles, later called electrons, with a charge-to-mass ratio about 1700 times that of a hydrogen ion.

Remarkably, he found the same particles regardless of the material used, revealing for the first time that atoms themselves had smaller constituents.

Newton stuck a needle behind his own eyeball. Around 1665 he slid a bodkin between his eye and the bone, as near the backside of the eye as he could, pressed to deform the eyeball, and recorded the white, dark and coloured circles that appeared, noting they faded unless he kept moving the bodkin. He was testing whether colour originates outside the eye or inside it.
