‘Nobody ever saw anything like this before’: how methane emissions are pushing the Amazon towards environmental catastrophe
As the world heats up, methane released from thawing permafrost and warming tropical wetlands is intensifying climate breakdown. But curbing it is achievable.
This article by Rob Jackson stanford in The Guardian explains how methane emissions exacerbate the Amzon’s vulnerability to environmental collapse. The region’s wetlands, particularly during seasonal floods, are significant methane sources due to their warm, low-oxygen conditions, which foster methane-producing microbes. Rising global temperatures, especially during El Niño years, are expected to increase methane emissions from these tropical wetlands.
This situation, combined with deforestation, is accelerating the Amazon's transformation from a carbon sink to a source of greenhouse gases. In 2015–16, an extreme drought driven by El Niño killed billions of trees and turned the forest into a net emitter of carbon.
Even drastic reductions in human-induced methane emissions might not be enough to counteract the methane released from natural sources like permafrost and wetlands. The urgency of addressing methane is underscored by its short atmospheric lifespan, offering a quick yet critical opportunity to mitigate warming if emissions are curtailed.
However, without interventions, the Amazon may face irreversible damage, making global warmoing considerably worse.

Being President of the United States is not performance art.
Nor is it one-liners.
An American President needs vision ,compassion, morality,
concern,honesty,civility.
Fundamental decency.

The coming week is shaping up to be a pretty crazy weather week in California, TBH--even more so than previously thought. Ongoing heatwave expected to be longer & peak even higher, & now we have potential influence of a soon-to develop hurricane to consider. (1/n) #CAwx#CAfire
