Long hair: A thread. I get a lot of comments on my hair, and while it's something I am known for, what's less known is that my long hair is important to me culturally, too, and the older I get, the more it matters. 120 years ago today, the "haircut order" was issued. More...👇🏽

For #BiodiversityWeek 💙, we’re highlighting members of the Biodiversity Team at OPC!
Through our Biodiversity Program, we work to enhance the diversity and health of California’s coastal and marine ecosystems, restore and protect threatened habitats, and support sustainable fishing through science-based, collaborative management.
Today, we’re highlighting Staci Lewis, Ph.D., our Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Program Manager!
🐋 What are some of your first memories of the ocean?
"Some of my very first memories of the ocean were growing up off the Gulf Coast in Alabama. On the white sandy beaches and the warm salty waters of the Gulf of Mexico, where you could swim all year long. I remember getting buried up to my neck in the sand and spending so many long, long days playing at the beach."
🦈 What are your hopes and aspirations for biodiversity in California?
"Specifically, within the MPA space, I’m extremely dedicated to ensuring that we have marine resources that are protected and conserved with every Californian in mind. Not just preserving and reserving these seascapes for the vitality of our planet but also for people too. One of the main themes in my work is equity and making sure unrepresented voices are heard to increase access and equity for all."
🐟 What advice would you give someone who wants to work in this field?
"Get in the water, get to know the people, and don’t feel like you need to stay solely on the academic conveyor belt. Careers are rarely a straight path. Talk to the person with the job you want and ask them how they got where they are. Take detours, explore, and have real-life experiences because you can draw on them to be a better problem-solver! You'll feel more connected when you get in the water - when you have your head below the waves and your toes in the sand."

Today, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (@NOAA) released the final Environmental Impact Statement for the designation of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary on California’s Central Coast. This is a huge milestone and critical step in the final designation of the new Sanctuary, which will protect areas of cultural significance to California Native American tribes, prioritize tribal stewardship, and safeguard marine life and habitats.
Upon designation, this Sanctuary will become the third largest in the nation and the first tribally-nominated Sanctuary in the National Marine Sanctuary System. See what Vice President Harris, Governor Newsom, and others had to say in NOAA’s press release. 🔗 https://t.co/b6ASmQx3nU
