Not even close. No, there was a lot worse time in history.
Figure on half the world moving south towards the equator during the ice age. Leaving home to just move for generations before even their great great grandchildren returning. Not to mention the cities built on the coast lines are now under water as the ice melted causing oceans to rise.
Then many many wars between that long stretch, then the Roman rule over Europe and boys taken as slaves to be soldiers. Imagine hundreds of years of war.
The Black Plague lasted 7 years, but the first major outbreak (1346/1347–1353) killed an estimated 25–50 million people in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, roughly 30–60% of Europe's population at the time.
Then the Ottoman wars. Europe had enough of muslims destroying their lives for hundreds of years and had to fight tooth and nail to get them out. (We may see a repeat of that soon.)
The "Ottoman wars" (or Ottoman wars in Europe) were not a single conflict but a long series of military campaigns, conquests, raids, and defensive wars between the Ottoman Empire and various European powers/states. They spanned roughly from the mid-14th century to the early 20th century (about 550–600 years overall). Millions of Europeans died.
Spanish Flu Pandemic (1918–1920): Overlaps the immediate post-WWI period. Killed an estimated 50 million worldwide

Then two world wars. A complete nightmare for hundreds of millions of people in over 70 different countries. 70–85 million deaths.
Massive amount of damage to infrastructures.

We are living in pretty decent times, even with politics being the only real problem on everyone's mind, but that is the precursor to future events that could take place that could cause more wars.
As you know, war is good for business so they will make sure there is always another one.

So you get the feeling this money going to the terrorists is just funding another future war because the terrorists are just increasing their military and buying up arms for their next invasion of another country. Perhaps they will go into Iraq or Syria again. Either way, it is funding future terrorist cells and a war will happen all over again.
So the big military machine will be back in the middle east for another 20 year war hunting down terrorists.
Basically they are creating more bad guys to make it more exciting the next time they go back in.
