@DiplomaPriv advocates for law students by exposing issues related to the #barexam process and the route to becoming a licensed lawyer in the United States. Through publications, it's our mission to provoke action in communities and help change legislature on #diplomaprivilege.
NY Bar exam results are out — Congratulations to those who now leave this barrier behind them. To those who must face it again: this is not a reflection of your abilities, intelligence, work ethic, or worth. You are so much more than they can measure.
Abolish the Bar.
In July, IAALS continued #RedesigningLegal with a panel delving into alternative lawyer licensing programs, how they differ from the current bar exam, what some jurisdictions are already testing, and how these alternatives might impact the profession.https://t.co/xN68WoJ5ba
Yes, this is supposed to be (and is!) a heartwarming tale of perseverance through adversity but also...
**ABOLISH THE BAR EXAM**
Many, many congrats to Ms. Lorenzo, of course!
@BicknellAlf@lexlanham Well, there's diploma privilege, apprenticeships, 3L pro bono requirements, etc. It's surprising we're still puzzled about the alternatives when the last two presidents of NCBE never took a bar exam and were licensed through diploma privilege:

For a profession that claims to be logical, the Bar exam makes little sense. It's time for this "hazing" practice to end.
A more diverse legal profession is possible so long as we leave behind outdated practices.

@nicktonckens The NCBE should be totally abolished or its management should be replaced, at the very least. And those in leadership positions should be forced to take and pass their own exams before they start harming test takers. #diplomaprivilege
Some in the legal industry have long sought to develop alternatives that would allow individuals to earn their law licenses without taking a traditional bar exam. But a newfound momentum for the efforts can be attributed to COVID-19. https://t.co/tzsa3EyJHH
@420AttyChicago @LukeRodriguez75 The #barexam is an arbitrary hazing ritual designed to assess one's memorizing abilities rather than legal understanding or readiness to practice law. #diplomaprivilege

Nora Weiss, a rising junior at George Washington University, said that the #barexam is an unnecessary barrier to entry into the law profession. She added that it was used as a gatekeeping mechanism to prevent Black people from becoming licensed attorneys.

The #KansasSupremeCourt has updated the rules of admission for attorneys in the Sunflower State to allow online applications. The court said the amendments also dropped outdated requirements and codified practices that already exist.

In this post, I welcome distinguished @YaleLawSch Prof. and Bloomberg columnist Stephen Carter to the small but growing movement advocating abolition of the bar exam! I myself am a longtime member.https://t.co/sXdaDhZy6c
@MermaidSailor Another reason why the bar exam should be abolished. There are more effective and realistic methods to measure competence.

A Canadian lawyer who has passed the #barexam and is licensed to practice in New York was denied admission to the #TennesseeBar. According to the Tennessee Board, her Canadian education was not “substantially equivalent” to an American legal education.

@UnlockTheBarNY The #barexam tests the ability to take tests, not the ability to practice law. Abolishing the bar exam is the necessary first step for attorney licensure reform.
#diplomaprivilege.
Brian Gallini, Dean of Willamette University's College of Law, has been part of a statewide effort to develop alternatives for #lawschool graduates to become lawyers. He said the #barexam shouldn't be the only pathway to practicing law.
