Today we published the new National Maternity and Perinatal Audit report on multiple births outcomes in NHS maternity services across Great Britain.
Multiple pregnancies affect around 1 in 65 pregnancies, and while most families will have healthy outcomes, these pregnancies carry higher risks for both mothers and babies.
This report analyses births in England, Scotland and Wales during 2023, including more than 8,300 women and over 16,000 babies, and highlights important areas where maternity services can continue to improve care.
Key findings include:
• 64% of multiple births occur before 37 weeks
• Higher rates of postpartum haemorrhage and caesarean birth compared with singleton pregnancies
• Lower rates of skin-to-skin contact and breast milk at first feed, highlighting opportunities to improve early postnatal care
The report also makes important recommendations to improve care, including better recording of chorionicity, improved data on assisted conception, and research into optimal fetal growth standards for twins and multiples.

🚨Updated NICE Guidance for managing iron deficiency anaemia due to heavy #periods.
This applies to ALL age groups that are still having periods.
If you are feeling dizzy, lightheaded, breathless, exhausted with your periods 🩸then you must be checked for iron deficiency anaemia. This is done by having a FBC, B12, Ferritin, Transferrin and Iron levels.
We have the updated NICE Guidelines- that say EVEN if the haemoglobin (HB) is normal IF the ferritin is below 30-70ug/L with a low Transferrin Saturation (TSAT) (<20%) this indicates iron depletion/deficiency and MUST be treated with prescribed oral iron supplementation.
After 6-8weeks of oral Iron, a repeat blood test is needed. If the compliance, side effects of the oral iron supplements is not tolerated or that the ferritin is not improving - request iron transfusion as well as manage the underlying cause of the heavy periods

Asian women in England are almost TWICE as likely to suffer the most severe birth injuries during labour.
Third- and fourth-degree tears, also known as obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI), are the most severe forms of vaginal tearing during childbirth
Analysis of NHS data shows rates of most serious tears are nearly DOUBLE those for White and Black women
Thank you to the women who are speaking up about this and asking for better, safer births

☢️ Dear medical students,
Take this advice from your Med Reg:
⭕️ Medicine is a dead career in the UK, and you don’t need to go through this pile of books for 5–6 years and then more than 10 years of postgraduate training.
⭕️ Sign up for any course in healthcare:
➖ Podiatry
➖ Paramedic
➖ Dietitian
➖ Occupational Therapist
➖ Physio
➖Physician Assistant
⭕️ Then, as soon as you finish, hunt for a trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) course.
⭕️ You’ll get paid at Band 7 as a student ACP, better than a qualified doctor.
why climb Everest when there’s an escalator next door?
@DrKateSimpson_ Put in a yellow card MHRA alert if this has happened to you because currently we don't have enough evidence to actually counsel women that this is the case - the studies that have been done are small but do not show this effect. At most some feedback from individual cases only.
@Microbedoc2 Nothing in writing 6 WEEKS after being offered a locum consultant post and resigning my existing job, despite chasing HR. When I withdrew from the locum post the CD then said they were "very disappointed" I hadn't come to them first. Sorry your Trust can't pull their finger out?
@Neuro_Matt 39 and doing resident nights. I prefer reg rota nights where you do a few in succession, doing less well doing 1 night every 4 weeks with a rapid turnaround to a clinic day.
Corrected someone when they called me "Nurse" today and their response? "Sorry I meant female version of Doctor"
...That's still Doctor sweetie. Consultant even. 🤦🏽♀️ #Ilooklikeadoctor
I'm not a Resident Doctor.
I am privileged enough to pay for a cleaner.
I pay my cleaner £25 per hour.
Resident Doctors are asking for less than that.
My cleaner makes my house smell nice.
A Resident Doctor will save your life.
